"Hello?" I asked, surprised at the fact that George was the first to dial in, breaking the cycle of me relentlessly pounding in his number multiple times when he wouldn't respond.
"Hey," George spoke, his voice cracking at the last syllable. "Whoa, sorry. My throat is dry." I heard him rummaging on the other end, and his gulps indicating he was indeed slurping on his water bottle.
"Understandable," I tried to reassure, and slumped onto the headboard that was cushioned by pillows that I spent too much money on. "Don't let that girl ruin your day. She's not worth it."
George laughed, but I could still hear the pang of disappointment remain in the fluctuations of pitch. "I know, I know."
The call became quiet too quickly, and I chewed my inner cheek thoughtfully, brainstorming what would be necessary to stitch a reopened wound. Apparently I had lost all skill that I possessed in high school to console people "correctly", which angered me to an extent. If anything, I wanted to take his pain and strip it onto myself. George didn't deserve it. He was a good guy, and only an idiot would be blind to that.
"What... do you spend your free time doing?" I finally said after spending too long gathering my thoughts. "Okay, video games, but-"
"Shut up. I do things," he protested.
