Tuesday afternoon comes around and Hayden acts like nothing happened. Not like I'm disappointed or anything because I was pretending it didn't either. Surfing is easy compared to skateboarding. Or maybe because I know how to skateboard it makes it easier to surf. I don't know but it makes Hayden mad when I can do advanced tricks. It's like I'm a child prodigy with surfing, making me even more confident for the competition coming up in a month.
"Is there anything you can't do?" He says as we sit on our boards, floating in the ocean.
"Talk to my mom." I joke and his eyes land on mine.
"That's not funny."
"Is too."
He scoffs and turns his board around, looking at the tiny person standing on the beach. I follow and my eyes land to the brunette.
"Is it 4:30 already?" He asks.
I look down at my watch and it says 3:57. "No, it's not even 4:00 yet." I glance at Hayden, who's now squinting to try to see the mysterious person's face.
"Nobody comes here. Like ever. Especially after school." Hayden starts paddling towards the person, but I stay staring. After he realizes I'm not coming he stops and looks at me. "Aren't you coming?" My head shakes slowly.
"No."
"Olivia, c'mon let's go." He nods his head at the shore and I shake my head.
"No, that's Michael. I can tell by his hair."
"His hair. Bro Jack and Michael are like twins."
"Jack is at his friend's house." I don't understand why I don't wanna go back. Maybe it's because I'm with Hayden and Michael hates him. But I stay in the same spot, drifting in various directions, rolling over the waves that push past us.
"Olivia, if you don't come, training is over." His voice is stale and I can feel my heart sinks slightly.
"You wouldn't do that." My voice comes out in a hoarse whisper.
"I would." He says before paddling towards the shore. I let a sigh escape my mouth before following.
As we approach the shore I can see Michael looking extremely furious. 'I knew this was a bad idea' I think, continuing paddling. The second we touch the sand, Michael's hands are wrapped around Hayden's throat.
Hayden claws at his hands, attempting to break free from his grasp."You filthy bastard." Michael growls, grip tightening as he speaks. Hayden can't make out any sound except a raspy groan.
"Let go of him." I shout, throwing my board down and running to them. Michael brushes my hands away from him. Hayden's legs kick at Michael but it doesn't affect him. My fists land against Michael's arms and tears spill from my eyes. "Please!" I beg.
Hayden's eyes roll to the back of his head before Michael let's him go. He drops to the ground gasping for air and holding his neck. I rush over to him, falling on my knees crying.
"I hate you! I fucking hate you. Go away!" I scream, wrapping my arms around Hayden. Michael stares at me for a second, silver lining his eyes, and then he takes off up the trail. The car engine starts, and then he's gone.
"He...is...crazy." Hayden manages to get out through hoarse gasps. I wipe the tears from my face thinking about Michael.
I fall all the way down and tucks my knees to my chest. Hayden is sprawled on his back, a red mark now growing on his neck. "Hayden I gotta go." I utter. And before giving him time to say otherwise, I'm running up the trail and off towards the house. 'I just left Hayden there.' My strides widens as I round to the house, the white Jeep is parked in the garage. I finally slow down arriving the door and I tear it open. Nobody is home except Michael. I storm up the steps and pound on his door.
"Michael let me in." I can hear things being thrown around and I twist the door handle. It doesn't budge and I pound even harder. "Michael Steven Anderson open the damn door!"
The rustling stops and I can hear his raspy voice come through the door. "Go away, Olivia."
A sigh escapes my mouth and I rest my forehead to the door. "Mike, I'm sorry." I can feel pressure against the door before I hear a click. It swings open and he has tears flooding down his face.
"What do you want." His voice is dead as his eyes meet my gaze.
"You were hurting him Michael." I utter.
"Olivia, you chose him over me." He spits and my heart sinks.
"I didn't choose him." My words obviously sink into him and his shoulders drop.
"You fucked up." And he pushes me out the door and shuts it. His words replay in my head and I can't help but let tears drip down my cheeks. I lean my back against his door, sliding down, and falling asleep after a few minutes.
I'm only asleep for maybe ten minutes when the door opens and I fall backwards. Michael is looking down at me, a hand outstretched. I take it and he yanks me up, his eyes staring into mine. "Sorry I'll leave you alone." I whisper before attempting to walk out.
"Olivia." His says grabbing my wrist and turning me around. "You're really sorry aren't you?" I nod my head slowly, looking at my feet.
"I didn't mean that. You were hurting him though." My voice comes out tiny and weak.
"I don't even know why I did it." He wraps his arms around me reassuringly.
"How did you even know?"
"Jack told me."
I drop my head back letting a sigh escape my lips. "Of course he did." Michael let's out a hardy chuckle before releasing me.
"Don't worry I won't try to kill your boyfriend again." He playfully rubs my head and pads over to his bed.
"Hayden Shortt is not my boyfriend."i say following him. He sits on the top center of his bed and I sit on the end.
"Well sure looked like it out there." He jokes.
"He's teaching me tricks." I say scrunching my face up.
"Ah makes sense why you guys were right next to each other."
I scoff and stand up. "You're just jealous a guy likes me." He slams his arms up and makes his eyes go wide.
"Bro I don't care. Your not even my sister." He eyes me up and down after this comment. My body slouches slightly and my eyes dim. "Look, I'm sorry." He whispers and I shake my head.
"No, it's fine. I'm just some stranger in your family." I say before storming out of the door. He tries to stop me but I'm already in my room, not wanting anything to do with him.
