He writes to them, to all who left him. To family, to friends, and the strangers he knew. He writes about what he never said, writes of how the world is doing without them.

He sits in his room letting the ink flow.
Filling it with the "I love you's" he never told his family.
Recounting memories of his friends.

But he writes to those strangers whom he wanted to speak to, but never got around to.

It's easiest to write letters to the dead, although filled with sadness, you are finally being entirely truthful to them. And maybe there is some comfort that they will not read what is written, and that you have said what needed to be said. Maybe why you hid your words from them was becasuse the same sentiment won't be returned. But now when they cannot be expected to speak out, you tell them about your feelings, happiness, experiences, worries and concerns. Part of the absence of their voice also fills you with relief because they won't be here to reject you feelings, your beliefs. Confiding in the dead with all these things is easiest because there are no opinions, no rejection just the silence which is taken as acceptance.
