"It's around dinnertime right now. Want to grab a bite to eat? " Bart asked Jesse, smiling sweetly. Bart had always been by his side, through thick and thin. Since they met in kindergarten, they had been inseparable. As best buddies they went through life, knew everything about each other; except Jesse didn't tell Bart about his biggest secret.
"Sure bud, let's go to that new sandwich shop down the street? Heard some great things about it." And so they went on their little journey to buy their dinner. The men made their way out of de Tweede Kamer, passing a few colleagues. Last they passed Rob, Rob Jetten.
"Have a nice dinner, gentlemen!" Rob said, and winked at Jesse. Jesse smiled uncomfortably. Maybe in another universe he would've liked Rob. Right now, he didn't want to think about that. He had other things on his mind.
"Ugh, I could kill that guy right on the spot when he talks." Bart said rather softly once they were out of proximity of their colleagues.
"Didn't know you hated Rob that much?" Jesse jokingly said, but he knew exactly who he meant.
"You know who I mean, dude. That jackass Baudet of course. He thinks he's all that, but in reality he's just a sad little man. Watch him lose all his zetels in a couple years." That last comment stung like a bee. Bart and Jesse knew all about losing zetels.
Not only that stung, though. Bart's snarky and mean comments towards Thierry hurt such a way that Jesse had never felt before. He felt his blood boiling, rage building, and Bart just kept going.
"We have to throw some sort of party when that guy inevitably has to leave de Tweede Kamer, right? God that would be so good. We can invite Mark, Rob, Kees... maybe even Geert. I can't wait to see that sad look on his face when he-"
"Can you stop it." Jesse said monotonously. He tried to repress his anger as much as he could, as a result sounding rather cold. Jesse didn't even look at his best friend when he said those words, those words in defense of their rival!
"What are you worrying about? That people are going to think we hate him? I think they already know our stance on him and his ideas." Bart looked at him rather confused "Anyway, we're almost at Ibis." Indeed they were. Jesse could see the sign of the sandwich shop in the distance, a small blue owl lit up by neon lights. With determination the men walked towards the shop. Bart continued his rant about Thierry and his godawful speech about farmers.
Then, suddenly, Jesse was pushed forward with such a force. He felt a big, muscular arm bang against his side. His arm started throbbing because of the power of that blow. He held his arm as if it were broken. Hell, it might have been! The pain he had in that moment was ghastly.
"What the f-... who do you think you are?" Jesse already knew the answer to his question before the stranger could even answer. That smell... it smelled exactly like...
"You know exactly who I am," Thierry said with a grin. "Keep my name and my business out of your filthy mouth next time." And with that he was gone. Bart was about to sprint towards him.
"Don't. You'll make a scene."
"L-look what he did to you! I can't just let him go like this." Jesse looked at him with those pleading eyes, brown like eikeltjes.
"Please, for the sake of Groenlinks."
And so the men walked to their destination, got their sandwiches, and walked around until they reached the nearby park. Sitting down on one of the metal benches, Jesse and Bart continued their conversation, not thinking about what had happened to them on their way to the shop. It being May, the nights were long and pleasant. The air was warm and a light breeze was present, touching their skin ever so slightly. The smells of freshly cut grass and daisies overpowered those of the loud adolescents smoking nearby. The men talked all night, but decided to part ways when the moon and stars inevitably showed themselves.
On his way back home, Jesse reminisced about that day. He ended that day with this pleasant feeling in his stomach, as light and warm as that spring night. This day he had spent with Bart was amazing. They could talk for hours and it would never get boring. They hadn't done that in while, but it now being May and post-elections, they finally had the time and opportunity to do so. Deep down, though, Jesse knew that the time spent with Bart wasn't the cause of that feeling, but a certain individual was.
