"my queen, you need to understand, you simply cannot plan a ball in the middle of our three nations quarrelling. it's useless and it will only distract everybody."

queen karen turned her head, momentarily resting her eyes from the window. her jewels sat on her chest, practically perfect in every way. she slowly removed her velvet gloves and folded them neatly.

"you see, richard, that's like kind of the point?" she chuckled softly. "since everybody's so frightened by the possibility of a war, i thought that i would do everybody the pleasure of inviting them to a party where they can take their mind off it. it sounds like the best thing to do right now." karen smiled and adjusted her crown so it fit on her head better.

"a-as you wish, your highness." richard, karen's most senior adviser, blinked several times before coughing lightly into his hand. "are you still adamant about requesting altea and margarette into these quarters for the planning?"

"of course i am. tell them i need to go over the final details."

a few minutes later, the kingdom's finest ball and party planners walked through the main hall.

"my queen," the two greet her and they curtsey.

"no need to curtsey, let's be lighthearted today." karen laughed. "besides, you're my friends! we need a bit of time where we don't need to be formal."

"as you wish, cabbage-head." altea relaxed her shoulders and cracked her knuckles. "keeping up the act is hard, you would know."

margarette fixed her cufflinks. "we had to bow and curtsey to nearly half of the kingdom's lords and lassies for their special occasions. it's nice to finally let lose."

"please ladies, right this way into the gardens." richard motioned them to a wide archway leading into the palace's largest grove of trees and flowers.

[france]

"we need bold strokes; we can't keep attacking them from the south. have you SEEN how that's turned out in the past?" jessica, the highest knight in court, screeched at the king's back.

prince james of france, heir to the throne, tapped his chin melodically. a constant whir of thought plagued his head like a child constantly asking for candy.

"my prince, please listen – we NEED to go the new route. the whole filipino monarchy know our antics, we have to catch them off guard-"

"yes, but what if the way to catch them off guard is to stick with our old strategies?" the prince turned his head and proposed the idea to the frazzled knight.

jessica opened her mouth to speak but no words came out. did this prince, the most respected military man of the nation, really tell the highest knight of the court that they should back down? are you hearing this right now?

"i know it sounds foolish, but we need to keep our options open." pacing around the room, he continued, "what if we fool them into thinking that we have decided to completely back down? make them think that we surrender? then we strike them between their ribs – the final moment of betrayal in this game called war."

jessica couldn't believe her ears. did he lose his mind?

before she could retaliate back on how this was such a stupid idea, the door opened wide.

"my prince! a letter from the queen of the philippines." his highness' second-in-command came trotting in, flapping a letter through the air.

"give it here-" james grabbed the padded letter and sliced it open at the tab at once. he examined it with such rigor, fiddling the wax seal that tied it together. a bright smile formed on his face as he ran his fingers through his hair.

"you seem awfully excited, has the queen died?" jessica folded her arms.

"read the letter, read the letter!" james exclaimed like a kid in a candy store. he handed her the letter with such excitement, something the kingdom hasn't seen in a long while.

jessica scanned through the letter and scoffed. "it's just an invitation to a ball. what's so exciting about it? you despise going to social events, you say they're pointless."

"yes, i indeed have said that before. now throw it all out the window." her eyes widened. "you see, our kingdom's incredibly dull. i can't plan anything now because mama won't let me and our party planners literally died to some illness."

"but we can find another one-"

"plus, it's always our kingdom planning and initiating everything. we've gotten incredibly boring now. it's my first solo ball – the first ball in french history where only the prince and his chosen people are invited and not the entire kingdom." the prince tapped his fingers together, "isn't it exciting?"

"it's also an opportunity for you to gather intel. find out what's inside the queen's head. to get close enough for her to trust you. then strike them between their ribs." jessica nodded her head. "now that's exciting."

james' smile started to melt back down into a frown. even though he didn't want to admit it one bit, that plan did sound incredibly well thought out for being made on the spot. it could work – but why can't he just enjoy a party?

"look, i and a couple of our knights will join you. you can enjoy the party and so will we! but when you decide that this plan is the only way we'll rise to victory, we'll be at your beck and call."

james smiled at his friend. "so ... we're going to a party!"

what the prince didn't know, was there was an equally unsuspecting duke in england who was invited due to the queen's visit, and he was well ... prepared to go too.
