At Aunt Edith's house, I prepare for the Christmas Dance. I pull out the LBD (Little Black Dress) that I wore to the funeral. I put it on and I realize that it is too small across the chest. "Mom!" I yell "I need a new dress! My black one is too small."
And then I remember.
And I cry.
10 minutes later, I resume my "get ready" routine. I have to wear the dress, as I can't get a new one before the dance. Oh well.
I find an old sash in my new closet. It's red. I tie it around my waist with a big bow on the side. Red flats. Curl my hair. Lip gloss. Jewelry, my mom's. And her wedding ring, on my right hand. I'm ready to go.
I head downstairs.
Aunt Edith drives me to the dance. I meet James there. "Hey gorgeous."
We dance together and afterward, he takes me outside and kisses me behind a tree.
I float home. The only thing keeping me in the car is the roof.
I hope my mom saw my first kiss. I hope she is happy for me.
I miss my family.
So, so much.
