When the sky was painted with darkness and when the sun had already set, I did all my evening duties and headed straight to Amelyn's cell. After putting Amelyn to sleep, I went to the kitchen. On my way there, I noticed my fellow maid check the hallways before going inside the King's bedroom. I passed His Majesty's door and entered the kitchen.
I placed my hand on the handle of a knife and hid it behind my back using my right hand while my left hand was carrying Her Majesty's lukewarm water. I exited the kitchen and made my way to Her Majesty's bedroom, on the way there, I had to make sure I hid the knife well from most of the Palace Guards that were roaming around the halls. Luckily, most of them paid no attention to me.
I opened Her Majesty's door slowly, which made it create creaking noises, but that noise was not enough to wake her up. I placed her water down the table beside her and made my way on her bed. I could hear Her Majesty's light snoring and the beating of my heart get faster by the second. I raised the knife over my head and muttered, "Farewell, Your Highness."
Her Majesty and I were both covered in stains of blood. I had stabbed her approximately three times: one for my Father, one for my Mother, and one for my Brother. I wiped the blood splatters off my face using the sleeves of my dress and cleaned the knife using Her Majesty's water, then I left the room and rushed back to the dungeons to retrieve Amelyn.
I was questioned by a few guards on my way to my daughter, they saw the red blood stains on my clothes and wanted to arrest me, but they never had the chance. Before they could even catch me, they were already dead. I opened Amelyn's cage and took off with my daughter sound asleep in my arms. We couldn't go out the way I came in, so took a different door to get us out of the dungeons -- it was the door me and my brother came in when we were still children.
Amelyn and I made our way to the River and saw the boat I had prepared earlier this afternoon. I gently put my daughter down inside the boat and started pushing it off from the land towards the water. A few moments later, I could hear twigs snapping faintly in the distance, and so I rushed and put all my strength in pushing this small boat to the water, thinking that it was the guards' horses.
I could hear my own heartbeat and I could feel it go up and down as if it's going to pop off my chest. When the boat finally reached the water, I jumped inside it, and just on time, the boat started following the flow of the river towards the North. I looked back as we sailed away and noticed light get brighter and brighter each second. The Palace Guards had reached the place where I had been pushing on the boat and I felt this huge feeling of relief go through me. Our boat had no light, so they wouldn't notice us in the River, and they really didn't. After searching for a little more, the Palace Guards started heading back from where they came.
I stopped looking back and started looking forward to where the River would be leading us. I picked up my daughter and planted a kiss on her forehead, and all of a sudden, I felt tears roll down my cheeks and started laughing. I haven't laughed in at least a decade and now here I am, laughing on a small boat with my dress covered in blood and a child in my arms. I take a deep breath and let the air fill my lungs.
"We're finally free."
