You woke up with a gasp, jumping so hard you fell right out of bed.

Wait, this wasn't your bedroom floor.

You looked around and finally realized you had fallen asleep on the couch, watching Grey's Anatomy with Steve. (You convinced him to watch it, you thought he would be interested in all the medical stuff, and he was)

You didn't remember what the nightmare had been about, just that it was bad enough to wake you.

"(Y/n)?"

And Steve too, apparently.

You stood up on shaky legs. "I'm fine Steve, just go back to sleep. I'm sorry for waking you."

He didn't listen and was immediately by your side, helping you down onto the couch and placing an arm around your shoulder. "Nightmare?"

You just nodded. He knew you had them, this wasn't the first time you'd fallen asleep watching Netflix together.

Without warning he lifted you off the couch and cradled you to his chest. You let out a small yelp of surprise. "C'mon, let's get you to bed." He said.

You were nearly back to sleep by the time he got to your room, and you became more aware when he softly placed you on the mattress, but your eyes remained closed. He pulled the covers over you and tucked them under your sides, knowing you kicked them off and started shivering in the middle of the night.

You felt the mattress dip, and his hand lightly caress your cheek, trying not to wake you. Not that you were asleep, but he didn't seem to know.

"(Y/n), I... I wish I could just tell you how I feel. But I can't lose you. Because I love you."

He was gone before you even had time to process. Steve loved you? Strong, sweet, amazing Steve? You knew you loved him too, but never told him out of fear of losing him. The same reason he hadn't told you.

What a pair of idiots you were.

"I love you too." You whispered into the darkness.
