Cheers escape the gymnasium as name after name is called. Reering the front my nerves spike.
"Roxxi Royce!" Shouts and screams echo, lights out. The screams stop and silence returns. I stop in the middle of my stride. Looking around, all I see is the tiny exit signs glowing in the distance. We wait in silence.
After a couple minutes, phones one after the other light up making little difference. The principal shouts out as loud as he can,
"We will finish what we can until the lights are back! Roxxi, come up!"
I begin to walk again, everyone's phones light up the walkway. I almost trip several times. The vice principal hands me the certificate and takes my picture. Soon, the following person is taking their picture as I shake the principal's hand.
The lights flicker, but shut off again.
When the ceremony was over we gather and organized so we could get out safely. Walking outside to the car was normal. Life seemed normal. Well, I guess besides the fact that I just graduated... The ride home was as to be expected. I contemplated my life and where I wanted to be when I got older. The lights outside were still off so traffic was inevitable. I don't know how we even got home. I went straight to my room and fell asleep.
During that night I woke up to knocking on my window. I crept out of bed and wrapped a blanket around me as I walked over to my window. A black figure stood there. I remember they were cloaked in all black. In horror I screamed and jumped back. The figure put one finger to it's mouth shushing me.
When I got up the figure was gone. A car sped off with a weird symbol engraved on it. It was too far away for me to make it out.
Everyone thought it was just a blackout that night. Little did we know it was the beginning of it all. Our world changed forever that night. It was never going to be the same again.
