George sat quietly as the priest continued his reading.
"Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor's wife and defile yourself with her," he spoke, his voice monotonous. It didn't even drawl smoothly, it seemed to skip some syllables and enunciate others.
The passage seemed like basic knowledge, if George was honest. Anyone that cheated on their spouse was dirty, and would ruin whoever they slept with, sending them both to Hell when the time came.
His skin crawled just thinking about the fact.
George glanced around the church, blowing his brown hair away from his eyes to see a bit better.
The entire group looked familiar, except for one. A tall boy sat a few rows back in the center row. He slouched between two picture perfect adults, his wavy blonde hair concealing the majority of his face.
George gazed at him curiously. The man and woman at his sides looked familiar, and something at the back of his head said he had met them before, but their names slipped his mind. The boy however, he was completely sure he had never met.
"Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord."
George's mind was far from the passage. Instead, he was watching the boy. The woman beside him leaned over to whisper something through a pinched smile, and he seemed to sigh before sitting up straighter.
George could faintly make out the freckles across his nose, extending to his temples. His eyes were a light shade, but George was too far to tell what color.
George was still trying to discreetly study the boy, when he looked up.
"Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable."
The boy scowled at the Father, soon smoothing the discontent from his face. The woman next to him smiled, genuinely yet small, and nudged him with her shoulder. Almost as if to make sure he heard it.
The man sat stoicly, his face never changing. A bible sat open in one hand, yet he never glanced at it once. He mouthed the words every now and again, like he had memorized the entire passage.
George's gaze drifted back to the teenager beside him, only to jolt in suprise when he caught eyes staring back at him.
George's mother looked at him suspiciously, but turned back to watch the Father when George smiled awkwardly at her.
He turned back to the boy, only to catch his eyes fall to his own feet as he slouched once more. The boy seemingly had no interest in George, or his staring.
George wasn't sure why he felt somewhat disappointed.
