Surprisingly the bus ride was rather fast when I suppose your deep in thought. Rather than it taking 30 minutes to arrive at Auntie Connie's house it felt only 10 minutes long. As the bus was slowly coming to a stop, I gently woke up Zoe.
"Zoe, wake up baby, were here at Auntie Connie's house". I whispered in Zoe's ear.
"But I don't want to wake up". she said mad. Of course, it's not like I haven't heard that one before.
"Fine, do you want me to carry you?"
"Yes please"
Gathering up our things, I picked up Zoe and god she's getting bigger. As I headed off the bus I struggled carrying Zoe and our things. For a 5 year old she was 45 lbs because of her height. Either Zoe has gotten heavier the last time I checked or I'm really pathetic and weak. Passing Hannah, Zoe waved goodbye, while I gave her our signal to wait for me here. Looking around it was relatively a pretty nice day to my standards. The dark puffy clouds covered the entire sky with no blue sky in sight. You could hear soft thunder going off in the distance with the sweet smell of rain filling my nose. This was mine and Zoe's favorite weather. In Albuquerque, you rarely ever got rain, instead it's a desert almost 24/7.
Stepping around the rain puddles, we made our way to Auntie Connie's house. Connie lives in a small community of houses, with almost all old people. She's the sweetest old lady you will ever meet. Sadly though Auntie Connie isn't actually our aunt, but she basically might as will be for always watching me, Zoe, and our other siblings all the time before the "event" that's forever ruined my future.
Auntie Connie is actually my grandmother's best friend and so we aren't in anyway related. Lots of people have said we look alike though with both our bright piercing green eyes, high cheek bones, oval face, plump little button nose, and filled out pink lips. She could be my clone, but just that she's way older of course. I'm happy and thankful Zoe and I have her in our lives, she means so dearly to us. And I could have never survived in this world with Zoe in my care if it wasn't for her support.
Normally you would think she would take both Zoe and I in her care because I'm technically living on my own and with a child illegally. But I refused, Connie is way to old and delicate to take care of two children in her state of position. I love her tremendously and would never want to put that responsibility and pressure on her. And so I toughened up and took mine and Zoe's life in my own hands and have been working hard ever since. So in return Connie wanted to help at least as much as she could handle. Which is baby sitting Zoe for me whenever I'm working.
This time it was Zoe's turn to ring the door bell, and only a matter of minutes later did my most favorite person in the world stand on the other side of the door, smiling that warm love filled smiled I've come to cherish so deeply. Connie's eyes twinkling with mischief, and the over whelming smell of freshly baked cookies could be smelled a mile away. Immediately, Zoe jumps out of my arms sprinting inside to the source of that delicious smell. I look at Connie shocked, so that's how she controls Zoe and gets her to obey. When I can't even get Zoe to be quiet for 5 minutes after yelling out load that this lady was fatter than a whale. Of course, I apologized profusely to the lady for what Zoe said. And we then left 5 minutes later.
"Wow, is there anything you don't know?"
"Haha. How have you been Chloe?" Connie whispers to me so curtain little ears wont hear.
Sighing, I struggle to look Connie in the eyes. "Honestly it's been terribly hard. I miss and think about them every second of the day. I just wish things could have been different." I finish up saying to Connie as a single tear slides down my cheek.
"I know honey it's hard, but you couldn't have done anything to save them. So stop blaming yourself Chloe. You know they wouldn't have wanted you to keep thinking and going on like this for your sake and Zoe's."
"I know, but I can't help it some times to think if I could have only knew what was happening sooner I could have done something."
"Chloe I hate seeing you like this, it break my heart sweetie. Please for your dear old Aunt Connie's sake, you must move on for Zoe."
"I know, I'll try. I love you Auntie Connie. And thanks again for watching Zoe for me." I told Connie appreciative.
"You know I'll always watch Zoe. I love you too honey with all my heart. Now hurry or you'll be late for your interview." Connie warns me.
Smiling, I reach out and hug Connie tightly and squeeze her gently. Letting her know how much I appreciate and love her. I yell out to Zoe saying goodbye and head back towards the bus where Hannah is waiting for me.
"Thanks Hannah for always waiting for me. I hope I wasn't too long". I tell her as I walk back on the bus.
"It's fine Chloe. And you weren't even gone 5 minutes". She assures me smiling.
I return the smile and head back to me seat. As I'm passing a older man that looked to be in his early forties, he looks at me rudely.
"You could have been faster, cause unlike some people, us adults have to go to work on time". He tells me rather loudly for everyone to hear.
"Hey sir! You better shut up or you can walk to work!" Hannah yells back to him. After that last comment he shuts up and stares out the window embarrassed. I look back towards Hannah and mouth a thank you to her. She winks at me and starts driving to every ones different destination.
I finally sit back in my seat and relax. I've always loved Hannah for her boldness. She's the type of person that doesn't take shit from anybody, no matter who they are. It warms my heart to still know there's people out there that still care about me.
Soon enough, it was my turn to reach my destination. As I saw hopefully my future work, I started getting nervous and anxious. God I hope I get this job. This job is my last option and it's bad enough that I've had to degrade myself this much to be desperate for a job like this.
Slowly, I walked off the bus and through the buildings front doors. So fare I was breathing unsteady and my hands were getting sweaty. But for me that was considered pretty good. I have problem when I get nervous, I tend to have anxiety attack and freak out. So this is progress.
"Hello and welcome to Hooter's. How may I help you?" Jumping in to a wall, I turn to find a women no more than three years older than me. God shouldn't she have manners. I mean you don't just go around scaring people half to death, and especially if they suffer from anxiety. It's okay Chloe, just breath and stay calm I think to myself.
Looking at the women, she stares back at me frightened and worried. "I'm sorry Ms. I didn't mean to scare you."
"Haha it's fine, it was my fault I didn't see that wall there." I say trying to cover up my embarrassment.
"But um my name is Chloe and I'm here for a job interview".
"Thank god we've been needing some new girls around here. Come with me I'll take you to my boss". And with a huge smile on her face, she turns around and leads me to her boss.
