Prologue

I saw his hate filled eyes first, dark and devouring. The metallic pistol aimed at me. Gunpowder filled the air. The warm blood of Alex stained my hands. I never realized how small she really was. Her fragile body, so petite, was soaked with blood that dripped from her body.

I parted her hair from her forehead, closing her warm hazel eyes with my free hand. Ten lives had been lost that day, a day that will be remembered forever.

His footsteps echoed closer.  A slow choke emerged from inside my throat. Never cry in public. My father’s words echoed in my head. They were quickly silenced as the hard steel of the barrel pushed against my temple

“I was hoping to keep her out of this,” He whispered to me lowering his weapon.

“There was no way I’d leave without her. You know I’m better than that”. I whispered to him, rage bubbling up inside of me.

“You’re an idiot you know that? You think she really had a chance with you after all this was over”.

     “I love her-!“ I cried.

“No!" He interrupted. "You love the idea of her,” His hands trembled under the weight of the pistol. He collapsed onto the wall next to us.

“You know that you had no way to keep her happy, she was meant for me”. He growled.

“And this is what you had to offer her!” I screamed back. I despised him with every fiber of my being. I hated him. How could he do this?

He cringed at the sudden outburst, his eyes dark and heavy. Cocking the hammer he lifted the pistol again.

“Well, we know how it all ends," And for the last time, I felt sadness.
