I sat in my car with mine and Jonathan's 3 year old daughter, Mia in the backseat.
Today was a special day, not only Jonathan had a game but it was also Mia's third birthday. And since it was her birthday and there was a family skate before the game, Jonathan had gotten her a pair of skates. But she didn't know about it just yet.
Jonathan had earlier insisted that she would have skates to skate around on, but I had told him that she was too young. At the time she had just turned two, and I didn't want my princess to get hurt.
I looked in the reviewer mirror, seeing Mia sing along to Let It Go from Disney's movie Frozen as her dark curls matched her light blue sparkling eyes perfectly caused me to smile.
***
"Daddy!!" Mia squealed as she saw Jonathan as we walked towards the rink to put our skates on.
"How are my favorite girls doing?" He picked up Mia and spun her around before pulling me into a hug, kissing me on my forehead.
"We're good. She has been running around the house all day, singing "Happy Birthday to me" not being able to wait to see daddy play." I told at him as I watched Mia playing with Jonathan's hair.
"You missed daddy?" He poked Mia's cheek which caused her to giggle, "Yes!" She squealed and wrapped her arms tightly around Jonathan's neck.
Jonathan made his way with Mia on his shoulders towards the rink, the view I couldn't get enough of.
As I reached them, Jonathan had pulled out tiny skates and he was now tying them for Mia.
"Look mommy! Daddy gave me skates!" She pointed towards the skates that were now on her feet.
"I can see that. You're a big girl now Mia." I smiled down at her as I put a pink helmet on her tiny head, hiding her dark brown curls.
"Happy birthday Mia! You're so big now!" Jeff Carter suddenly came up to us and lifted her up, spinning her around just like Jonathan just had.
"I'm three! Like McNabb's jersey number..." She explained to Carter who had put her down, "Should we tell him that he's wearing the same number on his jersey as your age?" He asked her.
"Yeah! He can't have a three on his jersey! He isn't three years old!" Mia looked really serious, causing Jonathan and me to chuckle.
Carter was keeping a straight face as he called McNabb over, "Hey! McNabb, Mia here has something to tell you!" Carter shouted to the young Canadian who had just finished tying his own skates.
"I heard it's your birthday today, congratulations Mia!" He smiled at Mia as he walked over to us.
"Yeah." She put her hands to her sides, looking all sassy. This caused me to laugh again, but luckily Mia didn't hear me.
"Why don't you look happy, Mia?" McNabb knelt down in front of her, "You can't wear number three anymore." She told him seriously, "Why not?" He asked her, taken back.
"Well you're not three years old anymore, and since I'm three now, you can't wear number three." Mia looked up at him, even though he was kneeling down he was taller than her.
McNabb looked like he didn't know what to say so I jumped in to help, "Mia, what do you think of your new skates? Do you wanna try them?" I asked her as I lifted her up, leaving McNabb with Carter who was chuckling.
"Yes!" She squealed and squirmed in my arms, I put her down and Jonathan took over.
"You ready princess?" He asked her as he had stepped out on the ice, Mia was standing by the rink, unsure of going onto the ice.
"We will hold your hands princess. You won't fall." I patted her back as I stood up from the bench, where I just had tied my skates on.
"You don't let me fall, daddy." Mia looked at Jonathan, "Pinky promise?" She reached her pinky up against Jonathan's hand, "Pinky promise." He said and intertwined their pinky fingers.
"Let's go!" Mia shouted and Jonathan took one of her hands, letting me take the other one.
We skated around the rink for a while, teaching Mia how to skate until she started squirming.
"I want to go alone!" She told me and I looked at Jonathan who nodded, "Alright sweetie, but don't fall okay?" I told her and she nodded.
She skated wobbling off towards McNabb, probably going to talk about his jersey number.
"MOMMY! DADDY! LOOK I CAN SKATE!!" She screamed excited when it was going somewhat well for her, "Don't look back baby.." I said to myself but just then she did so and she fell onto her little butt.
"Looks just like her mommy." Jonathan teased me as he wrapped his arms around my waist, "Shut up Mr. hockey player." I hit his chest playfully. He leaned in, pecking my lips.
"Eew!! Mommy got boy bacteria's!" The little voice that belonged to Mia sounded loudly from across the rink, where she was still sitting on the ice, but she was accompanied by McNabb. And all eyes were on us.
I buried my face into Jonathan's chest as I felt my cheeks burn.
"And she surely likes to tease others like her daddy." I mumbled as I watched our daughter skate around the rink, charming all the big tough hockey players with their wives or girlfriends and their own kids, who all were older than Mia.
"Hockey runs in our family's blood." Jonathan said quietly.
"Yes, it sure does." I thought to myself, enjoying this moment, wanting to capture it forever.
