You were able to change shape since you were exposed to some radioactive materials in Syria after a bomb hit. Fury had found you in your home in Ohio a however many weeks ago and said he wanted you to be in the avengers. You didn't understand why, you had no other abilities and no training. At least none that you knew of. You had trouble memorizing phone numbers! What good would you do? Well he seemed to disagree because today a helicopter landed in the street in front of your house with Shield agents and they weren't leaving until you came with them.
"So what's your thing?" Tony Start asks. You met with him and Captain America first. "Abilities? Do you have any?"
"Yes," you nod. "I, uh, well I can change my form."
"Form?" Captain asks.
"Yes," you sigh taking his form. "Hi I'm Captain America, and it seems you've found yourself in detention."
Tony chuckled, "spot on impersonation there kid."
You took Tony form, "playboy, billionaire, turned hero."
"Seems you found yourself a spot kid," Tony nods. That was months ago now. You've met all of the Avengers and made friends with them. Natasha was able to teach you how to take care of yourself in the field. That was a hard day.
"Y/L/N, we got a mission let's go," Clint calls.
"Are you in the vents?" You look around. "Of course you are..." You meet the others in the front of the compound. "What's going on?"
"We gotta meet Thor," Tony explains. "Loki is coming back."
"Mr Stark," Peter sighs. "Why is Mr Loki coming back? I thought he was imprisoned?"
"He's served his sentence there and Thor believes that he has changed. Guess we let just anyone here now," Tony sighed. "Y/N, we think your gift will help with this. And Loki likes Peter."
"Right. Why?" You ask.
"Because Loki posses similar abilities," Tony explains. "Are you up for the job?"
"Of course I am," you scoff. "Let's go."
"Great now let's go," Cap said. "Peter, you go in with y/n and make sure Loki doesn't do anything stupid."
"Is he gonna make this difficult?" You ask.
"Difficult is an understatement," Tony said. "He's a cocky bastard."
"I don't see how that's different from you," you laugh and the others chuckle as well.
"He doesn't pay you," Tony rolled his eyes. "Just be ready. And be lucky that I am not going to leave you in Asgard.
"We're going to Asgard? That's..."
"Its not too bad," Natasha promised. "It's hard to get used to the speed at first but after that it's smooth flying."
"I'm not scared of the flight. I was apart of the air force," you laugh. "I just was saying that the last time I was this far from the earth I got hit with a bomb."
"We will look after you kid," Bucky smiled. "Veterans gotta since the government doesn't."
"Do we count as veterans if we are still fighting? I mean we are just apart of a different army," you frown.
"This one has better off time and more benefits at least then," Bucky laughed. "And we have a home we can go back to."
"Not gonna argue on that," you sigh. "Worse PTSD though."
"Oh way worse," Bucky agreed.
"You know what they say about PTSD though," you ask and he shrugs. "Nothing because they don't want to climb up that tree and add it to Veteran benefits."
"You guys are depressing," Tony shook his head.
"Please as if Tony Stark doesn't have PTSD," you roll your eyes. "You have almost died multiple times. You were a prisoner in war. You have an entire team you look after. How do you cope?"
"Drinking and not talking about it, so shut up," Tony said.
"That's not healthy," Peter frowns.
"In adulthood, sometimes you don't get to choose the healthiest coping mechanisms," you shrug. "Way of life. They send you to a shrink. They will tell you that you aren't doing your life the right way. They give you a way to fix it. It doesn't help because supposedly you aren't doing it right. But actually it's because every little piece of information they have. All of the treatment options are based off of one person. Not you and they can only tell you what they know works. The reality of it is that not one thing works for everyone."
"Aren't you only like twenty five?" Steve asked.
"Yes, but you were twenty seven when you froze. You saw war and everything else," you say. "Look at us now."
"Mr Stark," Peter sighed. "How long until we get there?"
"Sorry, Pete," you laugh. "How's school? Still a genius? Top notch? Take over the Stark company?"
"That's for Morgan," Tony said. "Pete can start his own business."
"I'm doing well," Peter smiled. "Still have a few kids like flash making fun of me though."
"I can take care of 'em for you," you lean forwards. "Time and place. This kid learns who your friends are."
"As lovely as that sounds," Natasha jumped in. "I don't think that Peter should have people picking his fights for him. He needs to live a normal life for as long as he can."
"Besides what boy wants someone to fight for them?" Sam chuckled and you raise a brow. "Feisty."
"I'll turn you into a pretzel in that suit of yours," you say.
"Try me."
"Everyone sit down and buckle your seatbelts," Steve snapped. "We are about to go through." Everyone does as told sitting quietly. Peter looked a little nauseous and Bucky looked like he was gonna pass out. You'd never been in space before. From what you've heard though, Peter has.
"Are you okay?"
"Last time I was out here," Peter swallows. "I died or whatever."
"Well, it's not gonna happen now," you frown. "Promise." You held your pinky finger up. "Not on my watch" He smiled that signature, dopey smile and wrapped his pinky around yours. "Pinky swears are life or death to me kid. We don't break them." You look at Bucky now. "Buck? You don't look so hot, which is something I never thought I'd say." (Cue the laugh track and the Fran Fine camera look)
"Flying isn't my thing," he said.
"Bad experience or just overall anxiety?" You ask. "Because, let me tell you. I can probably help with both."
"Couldn't tell you."
"Well then let's get your mind off of it. Ask me anything," you say. "Anything at all."
"I don't think..."
"James Buchanan Barnes, ask me a damn question," you make yourself sound more assertive.
"Ooh the full name," Sam tsked. "Cold, Y/N, just cold." You look at the other man now. "Fine, I'll ask one that I know he's been dying to get off his chest. How do we know that this is your actual appearance you were born with? How do we know this isn't someone you make yourself to look like?"
"Well, that's easy," you laugh. "This is actually me... Aside from hiding a few... Scars from the explosion. But, no ones seen those here in America."
"Scars? Like are we talking Harvey Dent? Or like Wade?" Sam asks.
"Sam! You can't just ask someone that!" Peter's eyes were wide.
"Harvey Dent isn't even real," you roll your eyes.
"You don't know that," Sam countered. "These guys exist. There's a wizard out there. Why can't he?"
"He's gotta point," Peter agreed. "Maybe we just haven't met him."
"Oh my god," you rub your face. "The acid would have eaten a lot of his skin. There would be nothing left of his face. The pain would have rendered him unconscious as well. Also, his hair would have fallen of as soon as the acid hit. It would have melted. His pain would have driven him insane before his appearance and there's no way he can see from his melted eye ball. He wouldn't be able to eat as there would be no half of his face, thus dying from lack of nutrition. He never got the full help he needed for his injury either so if that didn't kill him the infection would. Especially since it happened to him twice."
Sam whistled, "we've gotta another little nerd on our hands."
"How do you know so much about Batman?" Bucky laughed.
"When you're locked in your house, self quarantining not because of a virus but because I'm not normal. You learn a lot about unnecessary things," you shrug. "Like you can swallow a golf ball but it won't pass. Or how long it takes to binge watch all of The Nanny."
"You didn't try to swallow... Did you?" Bucky's face was scrunched up.
"Oh god no!" You laugh. "Just got too deep in google to turn around one day."
"How did you get yourself there?" Natasha asked.
"I googled, 'can you swallow a golf ball' and there was a whole Reddit discussion," you shrug.
"My guess is that you used to watch a lot of movies as a kid? Then whenever you didn't know something you looked it up," Clint rose a brow with a playful smile.
"No..."
"Definitely did," Tony shook his head.
"Whatever. I didn't have a life," you roll your eyes. "Contrary to now, where I don't have a life but now it's in luxury."
"You're welcome," Tony nods.
"Shouldn't I be thanking Nick?" You raise a brow.
"Why would you do that, when I pay for everything! You all need to understand that. I pay. I'm the boss not the dick with the eye patch," Tony grumbled.
"Someone is moody. Did Pepper not fry clean your underwear the right way?" Sam chuckled.
"No, no guys," You held a hand up. "He's right. He pays for our living. He made your suit, your equipment, and whatever else. Now everyone apologize to dad so we can land."
"Mr Stark," Peter looks at Tony.
"Eh! Call him dad, it's rude," Bucky corrected.
"Everyone prepare for landing," Nat says. "Dad you get the front seat." She sits next to you. "Don't fall though because we don't have life alert."
"I'm canceling the subscription to everything when we get back." The shuttle landed with a thud. "Y/N and Peter it's up to you now. Follow Natasha."
"Anything else?" You ask pushing your ear piece in.
"Just don't do anything stupid and watch the kid," Tony said not taking his eyes off Peter. You nod jumping off the ship. The sky was bright. The city made of gold. It was like Ancient Greece but futuristic. Thor meets you all at the entrance of the large building.
"Spider boy! Natasha! Shapeshifter," Thor bellowed. "Follow me to my brother."
"Why do you get your normal name?" You ask.
"I threatened to kill him if he called me woman of widows one more time," Natasha rolled her eyes.
"Brother, our guests have arrived to transfer you to Earth," Thor announced. "Brother." A man appears on the floor. His face and hair disheveled.
"Spider boy," Loki smirks. "What does one owe the pleasure?"
"Mr Loki," Peter nods. Loki stands and advances towards the kid, but you stand between them.
"And you are?" He asks.
"Not letting you near Peter," you raise your brow. "Y/N."
"Y/N... Interesting. And why did the big bad avengers send you?" He asks. "What can you do?"
"Y/N is a shifter of sorts," Thor explained. "Powers much to yours."
"Chameleon," you say.
"Entertain me," he tilted his head. You roll your eyes. "Stage fright?"
"Just show him so we can get this over with," Nat snapped.
"Mewling Quim," Loki purrs.
"Prick."
You sigh but shift your image to match his own and he studies you, "very good. Very very good indeed. Never seen someone with so much precision in their form. You match me almost entirely. Though the look of confusion in your eyes shows too much. Emotion is where you lack."
"Can we move then?" You ask, bored.
"I'd like to play with you later."
"You wish."
"I do. Now, where do you wish to take me?" He asks.
"A conversion camp," you say and he laughs. "Funny that you think I'm joking."
"Last I heard, conversion camps were inhumane. Can you do that? Can you bring back to old fashioned tortures?" He asks.
You roll you eyes, "do you think of World War Two and laugh? Do you think that those innocent lives were a joke? Because I will gladly cut your head off right here." He chuckled. "You are sick!"
"He's only doing this to get a rise from you," Nat whispered.
"Do you think the people will care? You are not related to Odin. To Thor. The people will sigh with relief when I am finished with you," you laugh. "You can speak with all of the god complex inside you. But you are nothing without your power. Nothing without the fear you place in the peoples eyes."
"That is enough, Y/N," Tony moved Loki to the containment box.
"I fought for those good people! I fought for the good people to be able to live without fear and you ruined it," you slam your fist on the box. "I fought so people like you could continue to terrorize the good people!"
"Y/N," Tony snaps.
"You have no friends. No family. You are an orphan with no means," you snap. "Think about it, trickster god, did you trick yourself too? Did you trick yourself into believe you could make yourself mean something? When you mean nothing."
"It seems I mean something to you," he laughs. "What is it?"
"People have lost everything because of you," you ignore Tony. "Families! Children have lost their lives. Parents have been killed trying to protect their children. Then the ones who did live. They live in pain and they have to for the rest of their lives! You destroy people Loki. You destroy the people who might have been able to care about you." You laugh but there was no humor behind it. The other Avengers sit quietly, stunned. "Pain is all that follows you. Pain and ugliness." You show the scars that cover your face and body. The light lines that covered your other wise tanned skin. Your hair that was finally growing on the side of your head. The nails that broke off multiple times when you were healing. Your teeth that broke and fell. The bones that broke in several places that didn't quite heal because you couldn't bear to keep that appearance anymore. Even your eye that was blinded. "You are wreckage and that's all you will ever be. I lost my family because I changed. I lost everyone."
"Y/N," Peter touched your shoulder. "I'm sorry, Y/N."
You changed back, "Sorry guys." You say sitting down. You sit quietly for the rest of the flight and all of the awkward silence rose. They all would eye you waiting for another outburst. For anything really. But nothing and when the shuttle landed you went straight to your room.
"Y/N?" Tony opened the door after a knock. "We need you in the conference room." You look up from your book. "Now." You mark the page and throw the book on your night stand following him.
"What?"
"Y/N," Bruce leaned on the table. "The others were telling me about your... injuries. Tony and I have been looking at the footage and we believe that we can help. If you want it."
"Help?"
"Your bones didn't heal properly and every time you change your appearance they are rebreaking," Tony explained. "Your scars will start to get infected as they rip open again because the skin is rippling again. Your teeth can be fixed. And if you want we can help you with it all. Physical therapy. Mentality. All of it. If not, we just fix up those scars and those broken bones."
"Why?"
"Because you have been through hell and we all know you deserve a better life," Bruce says. "Easier."
"You were right," Tony crossed his arms. "Veterans don't get enough benefits. They don't have enough help. They need more, so after we help you. I want you to start planning a charity of sorts. Something that will give Veterans a place to go to when they need help. You, Steve, and Bucky will all be chair holders and I will move funds around once there is a plan." You smile. "But you need to get yourself healed first. That's the only way this goes down."
"Fine," you swallow. "Will it hurt?"
"Well it won't feel nice," Bruce shrugged. "But we will ease it as much as we can."
"Do we have a deal?"
"We do."
