Midoriya stared at the ceiling he'd seen so many times since he'd started at U.A. A hospital ceiling. He'd injured himself many times, and had been injured by others countless times. Even so, he was always ready to bounce back with a smile. But this time... was different.
Someone shifted on the other side of the room, followed by grumbling. He spoke without looking because he knew who it was.
"Keep complaining, Kacchan, it's not going to get anymore comfortable."
"Shut up, Nerd. I don't see how you're always in one of these beds."
"It's not so bad once you get used to it."
"Tch!"
Midoriya's faint smile faded as he continued thinking.
"Kacchan? Can I ask you something? You too, Todoroki?"
"You just did, Nerd."
"Sure," the dual-haired boy answered.
"Is it wrong to have faith in someone?"
Silence reigned for a long moment before Todoroki responded first.
"I think it's fine if the person earns your faith. But even then, putting your faith in someone other than yourself is a big risk."
"Hm. What do you think, Kacchan?"
His friend was silent for another long moment.
"You can't save everyone, Deku."
Midoriya slowly sat up, careful not to open his wounds. Todoroki was propped up on his bed, staring at his heavily bandaged hands. Kacchan was sitting upright, feet on the ground, staring at the wall. But upon hearing Midoriya's movements, he turned to face him. Midoriya held back a grimace as his friend stared at him with one eye, the other covered with bandages.
"I know what you're thinking. Everyone deserves a second chance. Everyone can be saved. It's time to open your eyes, Deku. You can't help everyone. At least not him."
"You're wrong, Kacchan."
The boy's eye narrowed.
"I won't give up on him."
"Stop being an idiot! Look what he's done. To me. To you. To our classmates. You think you can help him after everything? You think he wants to be helped?!"
"Yes. Because he's my friend. I CAN save him!"
The two boys glared at each other for a long moment before Todoroki cut in.
"Midoriya. What he's done is undeniable. He's hurt a lot of people. Do you really think you can bring him back?"
Midoriya struggled to his feet, ignoring the pain in his ribs. He wobbled on his feet for a moment, before steeling his nerves. He stared at his friends, allowing them to see his resolve.
"I know I can. No, I will."
Todoroki's eyes widened, before he smiled faintly, getting to his feet as well, though with considerably less struggle than his green-haired friend.
"If you think you can do it, then I'll stand with you. Not only because I'm partially to blame for him losing control, but also because I have faith in you."
Midoriya struggled not to cry as he smiled, extending a bandaged fist to Todoroki, who responded in kind.
"I'll fight with you."
Their moment was interrupted by an annoyed sigh. They looked to see Kacchan on his working leg, leaning heavily on a crutch.
"If you two idiots are so determined to try again, then I'll have to make sure you don't die," he grumbled, putting out his own fist. "Besides, you'd all lose a fight without me there."
Midoriya smiled at him, and Kacchan let himself show a grin as well.
Just then, the door burst open and Kaminari and Sero tumbled in. The rest of the class, or at least the ones that could still move, stood just outside the door.
Kaminari bounced to his feet, grinning wildly.
"He's my friend too, so I've got you're back. I'm fighting with you."
"We'll help you too," Yaoyorozu added, stepping forward. "Iida knew you'd be planning something so he told me that he wants to help as soon as he can walk again."
"Kirishima too!" Mina yelled. "He said something like 'A real man helps his friends, no matter how many times his arms are broken' and then passed out from medication."
"Everyone else agrees too," said Uraraka, "although we had to convince Ojiro and Hagakure that it's the right thing to do."
"U.A. stands with you as well." The students looked to see Aizawa, All Might, and Principal Nezu had snuck up on them. "We'll back your move and provide any kind of support you need. That boy is still our student, no matter how misguided he is right now. We won't rest until he's back safe and sound."
Midoriya's smile grew wider.
"Then let's get him back, and go..."
Everyone, even Kacchan, shouted together.
"PLUS ULTRA!"
This time...
This time he'd save his friend.
