Chapter Twenty Six
Harry and I kissed. We kissed. Me and Harry kissed.
No matter which way you put it, it still sounded weird. It sounded amazing, but awful, at the same time. Amazing because it finally happened. What I had been waiting for had just occurred. Well, it had occurred a couple hours ago.
We were now in hair and makeup and the show was not too far away. He kept looking over at me, smiling, and I returned the happy smile with one of my own. I don’t know how, but somehow, he always managed to reassure me that it was going to be okay.
“Why are you so happy?” Louis asked, eyeing me suspiciously.
My first instinct was to tell Louis what happened. But, how would he react? If he blew up at me for almost kissing Harry - imagine his reaction if I told him I did.
It was best to keep it a secret from him. For now.
“Harry and I just sorted out our differences,” I told him, and he smiled. I looked over Louis’ shoulder, where Harry was standing. He winked and looked back to Liam, who was talking to him and Zayn.
“Jamie!” I heard someone say from behind me. I turned around. It was Cher - a pang of guilt struck me.
“Hey Cher,” I said, breathing in deeply. Harry was watching us. “You alright?”
She looked quite concerned, actually. Her makeup was freshly done, and I could tell she was trying not to cry.
“Er, can - can you tell Harry to really listen to my song tonight?” she wondered, glancing over at him. I turned around to look at Harry as well.
“Sure,” I said, sighing.
“Tell him that he’s really special to me, okay?”
“Cher, why don’t you say these things to him yourself?” I wondered, gently.
“Because if I talk to him before my performance, I’m going to start crying and I won’t be able to sing,” she said, breathing in and out slowly. “No, it’s better if you do it. Can you do it for me?”
I hesitated to answer.
“S-sure, Cher,” I said, finally. She smiled in relief and walked away.
Why did I think my moment of happiness would last? There always had to be something that would get in the way. Always.

The show had started. In fact, it was over halfway finished. I had already performed, and so had One Direction. They were amazing in their rendition of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’.
I was backstage with the boys. “Harry, Cher wanted you to watch her performance,” I said quietly. He nodded and walked out of the room with me. We made our way over to the room that had the television monitor - playing the live show.
“She’s next,” I said to him. He nodded his head.
He slipped his hand into mine, and we intertwined our fingers. No one was in the room, and I felt a need to be near him.
We watched as she started to sing ‘Stay’. She looked like she was holding onto every word in the song as if it would be her last. She stared into the distance as she continued, and I couldn’t help but see the hurt in her eyes. The hurt in her voice. I looked over at Harry, who was listening intently.
As she sang her last note, she let her frustration go. She let a tear spill down the side of her cheek. She grasped to keep in control.
I felt awful and terrible and horrible all at once. It was the worst feeling I had ever experienced.
