Just as I declined his call for the millionth time I could hear someone knocking on the door. I got up from the couch and didn't even bother looking through the peephole because I already knew who it was.
"Montrell go home" I said from the other side of the door.
"Can we talk?"
"No"
It was almost midnight on a school night. I should have been sleep hours ago but here I am sitting on the couch watching reruns of The Office.
"I'm not leaving until you open this door" He replied. I have been ignoring his calls and texts all day. Why he took that as an invitation to pull up at my house? I don't know.
"I don't wanna hear any apologies so just go home." I was trying to keep my voice down so I wouldn't wake up my mom.
"Dream it's midnight send that lil nigga home before you wake my momma up. I ain't tryna hear her ass" My brother DJ said walking into the kitchen. I hadn't even heard him come out his bedroom.
I unlocked the door slightly, "What do you want?"
"I was gonna tell you, I just never got the chance" Montrell told me. I'm always the last to hear about everything going on his life. This isn't the first time I've had to find out something from our friends and I know it won't be the last.
"How long did you know you were going out of state?" I questioned.
"It's only been a week"
"So you had time to tell Marcus and nem but not your girlfriend? Okay got it. Goodnight Montrell" I started to close the door but he pushed it open.
"Aye lil homie take yo ass home. She'll see you at school" DJ intervened and closed the front door.
"Go to bed, argue with him in the morning" He said as he locked the door.
I swear both of my older brother's think they're my dad. They're not crazily overprotective and overbearing they still let me do what I want but they have no problem flipping the switch when it's time.
I didn't have the energy to bicker with him like I normally would so I just turned off the tv and headed to my room. I closed the door behind and just as I was about to climb into bed I could hear a faint knock on my window.
"You're so annoying" I whispered as I opened the window so Montrell could climb inside.
Ever since we started dating, he would sneak and stay the night with me sometime. To my surprise, after all these years we've never gotten caught.
"I'm sorry" He whispered but his deep voice still produced a lot of volume.
"Yeah whatever" I replied climbing into bed. Montrell is graduating from our high school in less than a month. I always knew dating a guy a year above would eventually trickle down to the part where he leaves and goes away to college. We started dating my freshman year and it was his sophomore year. Honestly, I didn't think it would make it this far.
"We got all summer to be together, don't worry."
Since he was a junior and the time was quickly approaching for him to start thinking about where he wanted to go for school, he always reassured me that he didn't want to go away. He said that he wanted to stay close to his family and that his mom would miss him too much if he left. Now that all his friends are going halfway across the country, he wants to go along too.
I ignored his statement and laid down in bed. I don't know what this means for our relationship. Long-distance isn't something I wanted to do but not being with him isn't something I want either.
