CHAPTER 2 - JOSIE

I'd survived a week without my parents. A week of looking for food, of sleeping under trees for the few hours of sunlight I could manage. I didn't see another person for miles.

I knew that we had lived far away from the towns, the cities that had tried their best to keep a safe haven. It had never worked.

Mom and dad thought they were better off on their own, out here where the attraction of monsters wasn't so high. In the cities, with the larger populations, monsters thrived. A majority of them could smell humans.

Every time I closed my eyes I could see mom lying there on the ground. I could hear dad's last moments.

I let out an aggravated scream as I tripped over a root. I was exhausted, I was hungry. Everything hurt.

It was nearly hours later when I saw my first town. It was small, maybe twenty buildings in all. There was a small farm and a large wooden gate up around the entire thing. There was an entrance door that was open. I guessed that they'd close it for the night, but keep it open during the day.

I thought about ignoring the town, about continuing to walk. Except where would I go? I had lived with just my parents my entire life. I didn't have friends. I'd never known my grandparents.

I walked into the town.

People were everywhere. Everyone seemed to be pulling their own wait. No one seemed to notice me.

At least, no one noticed me until someone screamed, causing everyone to look up. There was a young girl staring at me. Her mother was looking through a wooden box of tomatoes on a farm stand. Her mother looked up at me and pulled her daughter closer to her side.

"Who are you?" The mother demanded.

I couldn't blame her for being scared. I was covered in blood and I hadn't had a bath in a week.

"I just need some food, a bath maybe." I tried, taking a step closer to her. Someone's hand grabbed my arm, yanking me away from the mother and her daughter.

"Who are you?" Another voice demanded. It was an older man with white hair and a gray beard.

"I'm Josie." I answered honestly. "My family was attacked and-" I paused as my words caught up in my throat. I couldn't say that my parents were dead. I didn't want to accept it.

"Where are they?" The man demanded.

"They're-" I choked. I swallowed away the tears pricking at the backs of my eyes. He seemed to understand because he let go of my arm. "I'm by myself." I decided to answer. He nodded.

"Follow me." He turned around and didn't wait for me to catch up. I looked one more time at the mother before following the man. He led me into a small, wooden house. "Take your armour off and drop it there." He pointed to a wooden bin just inside the doorway. I listened. "There's a washing basin in through there, you can wash up quickly."

"Thank you." I said honestly, trying to hide my surprise. He nodded grimly and jerked his head towards the washroom door. I walked in and shut the door behind me, stripping my bloody clothing from my body. There was a washing basin filled with cool water but I didn't mind. I slipped in and grabbed a bar of soap.

I rubbed every inch of myself. There was blood everywhere.

By the time I was done, the water had gone dark and my skin was raw. I inched myself out of the basin and grabbed a raggedy looking towel to pat myself dry.
