"Just keep driving." I tiredly whispered unassured if the driver heard me.
I had an headphone on, while the recordings shuffled on continuously. I tapped my index finger on my thighs, listening to the voices emerging from the headphone.
As I closed my eyes, trying to make sense out of the continuous nonsense I was listening to. I felt confident I had caught on to an evidence, but it kept slipping out of reach again and again. It was kind of frustrating, I pondered, as I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. This instantaneously brought me out of my reverie.
"Yes?" I asked whilst hurriedly taking off the headphone.
"Where are we going to?" He asked.
Oops! It dawned on me that we were still driving and a cop accompanied me. I was confused by his question and I instructed the driver to pull over while we alighted from the cab.
"Ella?" His masculine voice pierced into my ears.
"Yeah?" I asked
"You're lost again. Where's your mind?" He asked
"This case is out of my league! I am just a new detective and I don't understand why the boss had to give me such a big case to handle. I can't even place one right foot in front of the other, without confronting stumbling blocks." I said soberly
"Should we sit?" He asked
"Not now Derrick." I tiredly said, walking ahead of him.
"Hey! Ella, let's sit and talk." He said running after me
"Fine! Where?" I asked
"Follow my lead." He said with a cute smile
We kept walking down the road towards a coffee shop, and it was obvious my mind was clearly not in it's usual frame. Finally, I gave up on trying to think straight because on the countless occasions I tried, I kept derailing and loosing tracks.
"Sit!" He ordered.
"Don't order me around Derrick!" I said sternly.
"Am sorry. Please sit!" He politely said with a mimicking stare.
I just ignored him, as I took up a comfortable position on the chair.
"What's your order?" A lady barista asked with a smile
"A bagel and a milkshake." I said
"And you sir?" She asked
"A black coffee only." He responded
"Alright!" She said and walked away.
*Five minutes later*
She walked in holding a tray containing our orders. Carefully, she placed it on the table before us.
'Her face looked so familiar' I told myself. Clearly, I was so confused on this case that everyone I saw, looked like a criminal to me."How much are these?" I asked reaching out for my card
"What..." Derrick tried to finish
"Your bill has been settled ma'am." She said turning to look at Derrick who gave her a wink.
"Seriously! Get a life!" I said to Derrick
"Are you jealous?" He asked
"What! Never!" I said confidently
"You can leave!" He said to the female barista
