Alex woke up in a cold sweat from a dream. In this dream she was having intercourse with another girl. She had no idea where this was coming from. All her life she was interested in boys. She also had been raised in a christian family where being in love with someone of the same gender is so very wrong. And yet, her mother had a close friend who was a lesbian. She was always told it was wrong.
She was no stranger to the LGBTQ+ community, she liked gay ships and knew people who were a part of it. But she only knew a small bit, and what her life was going to turn into was not a part of her knowledge. She had thoughts before about girls and ignored it because of her parents beliefs. So she told herself that she only liked boys, over and over again. But why now did she have this dream? She was, after all, only 12. And she already knew a guy that liked her... but he only liked her, he wasn't interested in anything more. Maybe she should give up? No, she had to stay strait, for her parents.
She was already really tired from the day before. Her parents had decided to move so that they could have a better life. But how could it be better when she was leaving all her friends behind? She had grown up in Goshen Indiana from birth, and now she had to leave. It made no sense to her. Now her room that she shared with her sister Emma, was filled with boxes. "Alex, get up!" She heard coming from the bedroom door. "Not now, James!" She yelled back to her younger brother. "But mom said to!" He said. Alex immediately jumped out of bed and opened the door. "It's breakfast." Her younger sister said from behind their little brother. "How long have you been up, Emma?" She said as she sat down at the table. "An hour." Her sister said while sitting down next to her. "No you haven't, it's only been 20 minuets." Her mom said as she put the food on the table.
When they had finished eating, they had gotten dressed and started moving boxes. "Alex! Come help me with the cat!" Her mom called. Alex was the only one in the family who could get their cat into a pet carrier. "Come on Scarlet." She said in a baby voice to get her cat. Soon everything was packed up and ready to go. "Yay..." Alex said sarcastically to herself as she got into her mom's car. Her siblings were riding in a moving truck with their dad. Alex heard the upset noises coming from her cat and she sang to her cat to calm her."And off we go." Her mom said happily.
After a few minuets down the road, they heard the sound of a cage door opening. Scarlet had broke out of the carrier. "Uh... mom..." Alex said but her mom already knew what was going on. They pulled over and her dad got out of the truck to come and help. They decided to let Alex hold Scarlet on her lap for the rest of the ride... the 2 hour ride. Surprisingly, the cat behaved very well. They had made a stop for the restrooms about half way there and Alex stayed in the car with her beloved cat. And an hour latter, they had finally made it. Muncie Indiana, their new home.
Alex was going to have a fun summer..
