Chapter 1:
The overwhelming anticipation was made worse by Isobel’s, or as most people call her Izzy’s, constant chatter.
“I am so jealous!” She exclaimed as she grabbed a waffle from the plate on the counter. “I mean Crawford Inc.” She stated, as if that was enough of an explanation. Which I guess it really was. Crawford Inc. is a global technology company that constantly stayed towards the top of fortune 500. “I wish I didn’t have to take classes this summer so I could have joined you.”
I nodded my head, having Izzy there would have definitely made me feel much better, but unfortunately she had taken some time off to travel her sophomore year, and had to make up a few classes now.
“Liv are you ready?” My dad asked as he came into the kitchen. He was buttoning up his shirt, and had an untied tie dangling from his neck.
“She is, but you sure aren’t.” My mom told him with a throaty laugh as she stepped towards him. “Here, let me help you.” She said, as she gracefully tied his tie around his neck. “There, now you look handsome.”
Dad gasped, and faked offense, “I always look handsome.” He informed her and then added, “That’s why you married me.”
“Ugh.” A voice came from behind me and I turned to find my younger brother Randy leaning against the doorway. “It’s too early in the morning for this.” He told our parents as he crossed his arms. Mom and dad just laughed at that, while Izzy and I simply shook our heads.
“Liv we have to get going.” Dad announced as he grasped the travel mug that mom set out for him.
As soon as I got up I was captured in a tight hug and got a strong whiff of lavender, which was Izzy’s signature scent. “Good luck today!” She said into my ear, before slowly letting me go.
“Thanks Izzy,” I replied.
“Good luck Liv, tell Leo I said hi.” Mom said taking me into her arms.
“I will mom.” I promised her. Leo Crawford is the son of Daniel Crawford, and a good friend of my father’s. After Daniel Crawford died, Leo took over the company. My dad and Leo became friends in college, they were roommates until they each went their separate ways to pursue their dreams. Dad went to medical school to become a surgeon, and Leo went to graduate school to earn a MBA and a Masters in Computer Science. Even though their careers took them in different paths, they managed to remain friends till this day. It was highly due to this fact, that I was able to get a summer internship at one of the most esteemed companies in the world.
I slid my purse up my arm, and turned towards my dad. “Let’s go.” I said, and started out of the kitchen, but just as I got to the door, Randy patted me on the back.
“Try not to give our family a bad name.” He pleaded, with a smirk, causing me to reach up and smack him on the back of his head. Randy might be younger than me, but he was quite a few inches taller. I squinted my eyes at him, and stuck my tongue out at him and told him to, “Shut up!” It was childish I know, but I couldn’t help it.
Behind me Izzy snorted, and I heard my mom sigh, but she didn’t say anything. I just rolled my eyes at my parent’s lack of intervention and walked out of the kitchen.
