Breathe
She reaches out her hand to me and gently cups my face with her hand, I lie my head against it and I look at her. I look into her ocean eyes and I see me.
"Breathe"
I suddenly wake up with a need to gasp for air after what felt like being strangled. I gently hold onto my neck, replaying the moment in my head. I try to catch my breath but why is it so difficult? My eyes shift left and right. I feel so...doleful.
A tear had run down my cheek but I was too distraught to notice. Deep breaths take me back to my room. Yesterday was mostly a blur but I did remember one thing vividly, the eclipse.
I couldn't think straight, I needed to focus. I need to think of anything else other than right now.
I made my way to the kitchen, to see my dad in the same position every morning. Cup of coffee in hand, leaning over the island and reading today's newspaper. Something to bring me back to what is real. Something simple.
"Good afternoon, sweetheart" Her father brazenly said.
"Afternoon?" I said with shock over her face
"You slept all through the morning as if it were nighttime. Are you alright?" Her father inquired
"I had a late study night. Must've not kept track of the time." She lied with restraint.
"If that's what you say. There is leftover chicken int the fridge from last night's dinner" Her father mentioned.
I walk towards the fridge to grab a bite.
"Oh, and sweetheart." Her father reached out to her.
I looked back at him with wonder.
"The school contacted me this morning, the rooms and halls are flooded with water so you won't have school this week" Her father informed me.
I nodded and continued to prep my brunch.
. . .
A few hours later into the day, Celena spent the day walking around the lake. Standing on the footpath looking out to the lake. Taking in its beauty, the way the cloudy skies above touched the lake, mimicked a watercolour painting. Softly breathing in the salty air. Refusing to shift her eyes onto the ground below her. Staying in this moment, was what she wanted to do.
Helio spend his day at school, because somehow Uriel High had survived the stormy weather and floods. At least spring break was approaching, only a week away, excited for what it was to bring.
Last class of the day. Biology. He leaned onto his folded arms on the shadow grey plastic table. Although he enjoyed biology, he wanted to see Celena. His eyes wandered to the window beside him on his right, he looked outside to see the overcast overhead. He stared out, searching for hope amongst the clouds. He wanted to see the sun, after all he was the sun. He had to clear up the floods, let the flowers and tree bloom and grow for spring. But the cloudy skies overhead were stubborn. Regardless of the floods, he wanted it to rain again.
. . .
I could only focus on the sky above. I knew it had to clear up but taking in its beauty seemed more worthwhile.
"Photosynthesis is the process of green plants and other organisms taking in the sun's light or otherwise light energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into oxygen an-" The teacher informs the students
The bell rings.
"That's it for today's class, we will finish up after spring break. Enjoy the rest of your day" The teacher packs up her equipment.
