The letter that arrived that morning pulsed in his hand, the shield on the note showing it was from Danbury. At that moment, he began to feel a knot in his stomach, it was not usual to be called urgently in her presence.
He could be one of the most powerful bosses in the mafia, but no one is above her, she is order and chaos, love and hate, ego and humility, and that's why she led them all.
He remembered the first time he had been called by her, after he had just lost Anthony and Benedict.
Both were practically newlyweds, they had been betrayed. A bomb in the cellar of their yacht had killed his brothers and his wives in an instant, leaving his family shattered and him in charge of the business.
The pain of having lost two of the most important people in his life had to be repressed as he prevented his adversaries from attempting to seize power.
His mother had been devastated, but with the mettle that only a woman who had grown up in the mafia could have, she held her head high and ordered him to take the lead in everything to find the culprits, she wanted revenge. His brother and sisters had had the same response.
"Your brothers must be avenged, they will not rest in peace until we find the culprits" his mother did not cry out, but her eyes reflected all the pain and anger.
His sisters were almost as fearsome as he (actually sometimes they were more), they owned their own businesses, they were also married to renowned businessman / powerful gangsters who had an alliance with him. The youngest, Hyacinth, was married to Garreth, his right hand, his younger brother turned third in command, still in training, married to one of the best assassins in the business, his sweet face was his best weapon.
And while his people searched for the killers, he and his family had been called in the presence of Danbury. He would never have imagined what awaited them.
The place on the outskirts of London was an old country house that had once belonged to an Earl, out of the public eye. He did not remember how he had gotten there, deep in thought and with his nerves on the surface. It was the first time that he would be introduced as the head of the family.
Upon arrival, their weapons were taken from them and they were taken to a room that had once served as a ballroom, full of paintings and chandeliers, the mahogany floor gleamed with every step they took. At the back of the room, there was Danbury, in a suit and sunglasses, you could feel her energy throughout the room.
They reached where she was, they all bowed with their hands in their hearts as a sign of respect, which was answered with a nod of the head. Danbury came down from the floor where her chair was located and went directly to Violet.
"I am very sorry for the loss of your children," she said while taking his hands "the guilty will be punished"
"Thank you, that's all I want," she replied with her head held high.
"Mr. Bridgerton," she turned to see Colin and walked to face him "I hope you are prepared for the responsibility that lay in your hands."
"I am" he replied, his face serious and determined.
"Very good, Eagle" Danbury returned to sit in her comfortable armchair "You will have to be patient dear ones, what you are about to witness concerns you"
The entire Bridgerton family exchanged glances without understanding, but heeding what was asked of them.
"Let the others come in," she ordered.
The doors opened to make way for a group of people led by a man he recognized as Berbrooke, who after the death of his father-in-law, had taken over the Featherington family. It had all been too suspicious and took place almost at the same time as the death of his brothers.
