Prologue

He was sinking, and fast.

Deathologists say drowning is perhaps the best way to die, that a euphoric sensation supposedly blankets one's consciousness right before losing it. They had no idea what they were talking about.

As his body rapidly succumbed to the laws of gravity, his hands desperately clutched at the nothingness before him.

The chlorinated water stung at his dilated pupils, wrapped its suffocating tentacles around his lungs and jetted up through all his orifices  in a death surge unlike any tsunami he had ever witnessed.

As his body landed in a deaf thud and the last ounce of precious life left his body, he saw no bright lights, nothing flashed before his eyes and all he felt was darkness.
