"Mom, Dad, isn't it pretty?"
I watched from behind Papa's leg, wide-eyed as big sister Himiko held up a dead, bloodied bird. Mama covered her mouth, staring in horror, and Papa covered my eyes as he looked at the bird.
I peeked around Papa's hand, looking at big sis. I was too young to understand what was happening, but I knew our parents weren't happy.
Himiko licked her lips as she held up the dead bird, inching in closer to our parent's faces. "Look! Look! It's pretty, right?"
"No!" Mama lost it, smacking the dead bird out of big sisters hands and kneeling down in front of her, grabbing her arms to keep her in place. Himiko's smile dropped for a second as the bird fell, but quickly returned as she looked at Mama.
"You need to stop this, Himiko," Mama wasn't smiling back.
Papa pushed me behind him more as he added, "this is disgusting. This isn't right. Listen to your mother, Himiko. Be more like your sister. You need to be more normal."
"Yes, normal. Himiko, whatever you do, you can't do this again. You can't like these things, do you understand? You need to be normal," Mama shook her once, for emphasis, before letting her go. Her hands retracted from big sister so quickly, it was like they burned when they touched her.
"Yes, Mother." Her smile faded into a small one, but despite her words, she couldn't keep her eyes off of the bloodied bird, yet to be disposed of by our father.
...
"Tuski! Tsukiko, come! This way!" Himiko was excited. It was never a good thing when my sister was genuinely this excited.
Still, I let her drag me around the outside of our school, hoping that whatever she was excited about wasn't anything too horrific. It was her last year of middle school, and I was just a year younger than her, so we attended the same school. With Mom and Dad pressuring Himiko to hide her quirk and anything related to her...affinity...for blood, Himiko pushed all of her feelings about it aside and became a perfect, ideal student. What they didn't know is that Himi didn't push her feelings away completely. No, she funneled them so that they would be limited to only sharing her morbid fascination with me.
She scarred me in more ways than one, all to feed into her disturbing interest...but I knew a large portion of it was something she'd never be able to control, it wasn't her fault she was born with her quirk. But, it was her fault for acting on it in the ways that she did...
Himiko pulled me around yet another corner, to the side of the school. What I didn't expect was for there to be a boy, fighting and getting covered in bruises and blood. In an instant, I knew why Himiko was here - why she was so excited.
This boy was Saito, a boy she thought she had a crush on. But with him being covered in blood...this wouldn't end well.
Himiko's cheeks grew red as she stared at Saito, and I quickly grabbed her arm before she could run off too far.
"Sister, no."
Himiko's fanged smile grew larger and she ran her tongue across her teeth as she looked back at me. "Isn't he so...pretty?"
My grip tightened, doing everything I could to keep her by me. It was all I could do. I didn't know what she had planned by dragging me here or even coming here in the first place, but it wasn't good. We need to leave.
"Himiko," I spoke her name with a warning tone, tugging her towards me harder as I tried to take a few steps back.
Himiko giggled. Everything was a joke to her, wasn't it?
