I having seen him, in what, almost a year? Was when he came down for Christmas and we all went to mom's. It was difficult. I thing we both knew it would be moms last Christmas. She put a lot of effort in, as usual, mom did, but the chemo had ravaged her and she looked brittle, weightless and translucent, like the sloughed-off carapace of a beetle. Like she was gradually fading away. After we ate lunch she said she had to go upstairs for a sleep, and when she hauled herself up the stairs , Jayme and I watched television together, we didn't talk for a long time, just watched an old black and white film in silence, but then I said something or he said something I don't quite remember and it turned into an argument. The next day we went back home, and after that I got the dealing that he didn't want to talk to me for a while. She didn't come to moms funeral.
I Roll the phones curser onto "View" and click ok, and a message blooms onto the screen: "don't come here stay away it isn't safe it isn't safe" I read it twice more before I realize that the phone displays the most resent of the three messages first I scroll back to the previous message: "it's coming it knows I'm here it won't leave me alone I don't know what it wants". Then finally, I thumb the bitten to the first message: "pls help I'm in Serious trouble H"
My immediate reaction is to call jayme, but when I dial her number it goes strait to voicemail. I try his land line, let I ring and ring but know one picks up. I end the call and allow the phone to slip from my hand and onto the counter. I take a deep breath. The kitchen suddenly folks cold and artificial. Jayme's house in swinwood is a four hour drive away. At least, but if I leave there immediately then I could be there by lunch time. I stand up, walk out into the hallway and lift
Off the hook by the door, but before I am able to open the door the land line starts to ring. In the stillness of the house it sounds deafening. And the silence between the rings vegans to magnify. When I reach the phone I find myself pausing, my hand held by the understanding that ignorance is hope and to answer is is the chance to loosing that hope. I almost ignore that call, almost walk out of the house and get into my car and drive up to swinwood as the phone rings, but reason takes hold of me and I snatch up the receiver.
"Hello?" I say
"Hello, Is this mr. W?". It's a mans voice. Northern accent. Slightly tentative.
"Yes."
" Chula .W."
"Yes thats right who am I speaking to?"
"It's inspector Hallum, from canham police. It's about your brother."
