"what?" tadashi said and peeked over the book he was reading to glance at his younger brother on the other side of the room, sitting on the edge of his bed with his back towards him. hiro turned to look at him and the look on his face wasn't a stranger to tadashi. "look," tadashi said and set his book on his bedside table. "i know, but, hiro, listen to me. you can go see them all you want-""tadashi, i just want all of us to be together again," hiro said and tadashi stood up from his bed, making his way over to hiro.tadashi sat next to hiro on his bed, the mattress sinking slightly before he put his arm around his younger brother. "it's been ten years, i don't understand why you're bringing this up now?""because," hiro trailed off, anticipation swelling up in tadashi's chest. "i miss them. don't you?" "she left us," tadashi muttered. hiro stood up from his bed and tadashi flinched at the sudden movement. "no, tadashi!" hiro nearly shouted. "you left her! you left her when she was at her worst! how could you do that? and because of you, it's been ten years since we've seen our best friends together. since we left sfit. since we saw her! because of you!"the words hit tadashi like a train, pushing him into silence. "hiro, i don't understand why you can't just see them yourself. i never asked you to hole yourself up in here and never see the light of day ever again," tadashi replied calmly, trying to keep his composure."it's not the same without you. it's not the same without her either. you've ruined this for yourself and for us. i don't understand why you don't come with me," hiro argued, his face on the verge of reddening. "because it's my fault!" tears pooled around tadashi's now darkened pupils. "i can't see her! the last time i saw her, she was almost dead! she still is because of me! so, stop asking!" tadashi yelled, the tears finally falling, staining his cheeks."last night, i saw her," hiro said."you what?" tadashi breathed, his breath hitching in his throat."she hasn't woken up yet.""and she won't," tadashi said before he made his way back to his bed, closing the divider that separated the both of them.he listened to the gentle sounds of hiro's footsteps and made out his silhouette in the sunlight. "how could you say that?" hiro asked as tadashi watched hiro's silhouette wiping tears from his eyes. "just- i'm going to see her again tonight. please, just come with me.""why are you going to see her? there's no point," tadashi said flatly, regretting every word that he spoke."tadashi, she could wake up any moment and i don't want to miss it. she'll wake up with no one by her side.""then i don't understand why you're not there with her." "tadashi!" hiro yelled again, ripping open the divider. "stop acting like a dickhead, stop thinking about yourself! pull yourself together and see her! just once. just once and she'll be thankful." "how can she be thankful when i'm there? why would she want to wake up to me sitting by her side? why would she want the person who ruined her life to be the first one she sees after ten years? why?" tadashi clenched his eyes shut, trying to calm himself down and it's no use. everything is breaking and shattering all around him, once again, and he doesn't expect it to be the last."please, even if she doesn't wake up. do it for me, do it for her. do it for anyone you've ever loved." you're the cure, you're the pain, you're the only thing i wanna touchit's four in the afternoon.there's always a strange feeling that surrounds a hospital and tadashi could never pick up on it. it's the first time he's been out in a while and he doesn't want to breathe in the fresh air. he's afraid it'll ruin him again.tadashi's breath is white in the air and everything he could see was frosted - the trees, the windows, the cars. everything except that burning aura that radiated from a window on the fifth floor of the white building he dreaded, he hoped never to encounter again.the brothers enter the hospital as doctors in uniforms are scattered all around, running, walking, panicking, calm. he doesn't understand how they can cope with such... things.the cold had disappeared once they entered but tadashi was still numb. either from the cold or something else - he's not sure.tadashi followed his younger brother into the elevator and he pressed a button as the feeling of going up felt like going down. "i'm glad you're here," hiro said, keeping his eyes on the door."well," tadashi muttered. "i don't know what else i could've done." the doors open before them and hiro steps out, rooms printed along the walls as doctors walked up and down the hallway. hiro walks to a room on the far right, the same warm and burning aura from outside radiating from the room. he has a feeling he knows what it is but he doesn't want to know either.there's a group of four people on the chairs in front of the hospital room, their heads in their hands. tadashi and hiro don't notice at the one head that looks up at the sound of their footsteps and the face isn't familiar."hiro?" all of their heads shot up and the feeling of nostalgia sits in their stomachs. "tadashi?" "oh, my god," tadashi muttered as hiro stood in front of him. "guys," hiro's breath hitched in his throat as tadashi looked away, his hand running down his face.the five of them gathered in an embrace, pouring all their memories and souls into each other as they cried.gogo tomago's hair no longer had the purple highlights and hiro smiled when he noticed she hadn't grown a bit, but that was okay.honeylemon hadn't thrown away her fashion sense but her hair was a stranger. it had been cut to her shoulders and her now-black glasses framed her face well like it always has. wasabi grew stronger and wiser, even though it was always enough from ten years ago. his hair had grown out, pulled back in a ponytail and his facial structures sharper and richer. fred - what could he say? fred was a daydream, his blonde hair slick back into a quiff, the beanie thrown away. black glasses now took the place on the bridge of his nose but he was still the same old fred."why today?" hiro asked.tadashi took all of his strength to turn around, facing the people he knew better than the back of his hand. a silence fell around them as the four of them took in tadashi. brown eyes, washed out with everything he's seen and stained from his past. almost stronger, but the scars on his neck cover it like constellations smudged across his throat and his upper chest, purple and black bruises like a thumbprint from god under his shirt. the sfit hat they knew too well was long gone from his black, scruffled hair, messed in the cold before. gogo steps in to hug him first and tadashi takes a while to return the favour because it's almost he's forgotten how to. "i'm so sorry," tadashi whispered and the rest of them joined. "it's been ten years," gogo said. "i hope you are.""don't say that to us, though," wasabi said as they all pulled away from him. "say that to the girl inside." tadashi's heart sink and he looked at the door. "we've already went in," honeylemon said, sitting back down on the chairs. "she's doing well for someone in a coma."hiro nodded and put his hand on the door handle. "are you ready to see her?" he asked."i hope." never knew that it could mean so muchhiro opened the door slowly and tadashi immediately took the room in.cold. sterile. the walls streaked from where it's been cleaned, the windows frosted, barely even seeing the outside. it smelt clean, like the floors had been cleaned with bleach. the beeping filled the silence that surrounded them as tubes hung up from the bed, a person lying there he hadn't expected to see only last night.it intimidated him.the nurse turned around at the sound of their footsteps, her mouth opening to say something before something buzzed in her pocket and a small voice - "code blue". the nurse made her way out of the room, closing the door behind them as hiro walked over to the bed, pulling two chairs with him, setting it down. the same aura burned in the air.tadashi slowly followed behind him before she came into view over hiro's head. he swore his heart stopped beating when he saw her. tadashi kept his eyes on her and watched her chest rise up and down, slowly and gently, as he took a seat next to hiro. "how are we feeling?" hiro asked quietly, turning towards him.he examined every movement that came with her but he looked away. he suddenly remembered. "i can't do this-" tadashi started, standing up from his chair but hiro quickly pulled him back down."you just reunited with your friends after ten years, i'm sure you can reunite with another."tadashi breathed and felt the tears forming in his eyes again. he looked at her again, his eyes running over her frail body. it was similiar to his own, constellations on her neck and the peek of god's thumbprints on her arms. you're the fear, i don't care, 'cause i've never been so hightadashi grabs her hand in his own and the moment feels so sharp - so fragile. he squeezes it and he's hoping it gets some life to surround her body. it's a while before he notices her hand is warm, almost burning, bringing back memories he never wants to remember. he continues through the pain, the burning, stinging pain and a single tear drops on the space between her thumb and her index finger. he wonders how she would react if she would wake up now. he wonders what would happen to him. he doesn't realise hiro had left the room and he doesn't how long he's been in this position. he notices how the sun made its way down, the sky turning into an inky blue and he can almost make out the muted whiteness on the ground before the horizon. but he realises the still burning aura that surrounded her and it burned with hopes. he doesn't know where his thoughts are at. it's like dark seeking for darkness and the light getting lost. he looks at her and what she looks like now makes him think what that does to him. he remembers what happened, what used to be. they were the closest of friends, almost the same person. but ten years is a long time and life keeps moving.follow me to the dark, let me take you past a satelliteshe had always been supportive of tadashi. she was everything to him just as he was everything to her. back at sfit, all of them were classmates and it was the best time of his life. he wished he could go back then he remembers why he didn't graduate. why hiro didn't graduate.especially when she didn't, either.you can see the world you brought to life"tadashi!" the voice exclaimed, the door closing before them. tadashi looked up from his desk to see her holding a newspaper to her chest, the brightest smile she could ever wear. she held the newspaper in front of his face as she squealed behind it. college student's robot saves millions around the world"congratulations, bonehead! you're like a god now!" she said, as tadashi grabbed the newspaper in shock, his mouth gaping wide open."you're joking! i can't believe this! how come i didn't know before this newspaper did? and before you?!" tadashi laughed as he threw the newspaper on his desk before he hugged her and spun her around. "i'm so proud of you!" she laughed with him. "tadashi! put me down!" she took his hat from his head and put it backwards on her own head. tadashi set her down before he shook his head and grabbed the hat back. "no one's allowed to wear this hat!" tadashi retorted playfully, a grin plastered on his face. the news still hadn't sunk in yet."who cares! baymax is a saviour and you're a genius! this is amazing, tadashi, think about the future!"tadashi chose not to. fading in, fading out, on the edge of paradise, every inch of your skin is a holy grail i've gotta findtadashi's eyes slowly opened to the shining light through the window. the room looks and feels different in the morning - warmer, somehow.the curtains are wide open and he puts his hand over his eyes to stop the glaring sun from blinding him. he could faintly see that the world was white with snow and cherry blossom trees are no longer their colour anymore. he can make out a pale blue pond on the horizon, frozen with the cold.he sits up more and it takes time to realise where he is. in the hospital. he fell asleep here, holding her hand for dear life as he slept. he didn't know what she was doing, if she slept, if she just laid there. if she could hear him breathe as sleep took him over."morning," a voice said and tadashi tiredly turns his head towards the door. he sees hiro leaning in the doorway, his arms crossed as he leans against the frame. "did you sleep okay?"tadashi ignored the question. "where did you sleep?""the hospital had a few beds vacant so we took some beds and some chairs and slept in the room a few doors down," hiro said as he walked over to tadashi and (y/n). "you fell asleep pretty early. we didn't want to leave you here just in case you freaked out or something."tadashi shook his head. "are they up?" "no, they're still sleeping. we were up late last night, just in case you woke up and you wanted to head home." "why are you up then?""just to check how my big brother is doing," hiro gave a soft smile and squeezed tadashi's shoulder. "are you okay?" hiro knew that over the years, how much his older brother had grown as a teenager, how much he had grown sad. maybe a little distant too, but he was still tadashi."i'm sorry," tadashi breathed out suddenly. "why are you sorry?""you know why i am- because i did this, because i made you guys suffer. i'm sorry. i mean, look at us, we all used to be best friends, the seven of us, eight if you include baymax and now- i don't even know what we are anymore," tadashi said, voice thick with feeling and emotion and he rubs his eyes. "we're still best friends. of course we are, the eight of us. it's that simple," hiro said."hiro, you know it's not.""but why can't it be?" hiro asked, almost upset as he pulled up a chair next to tadashi. "listen. the seven of us haven't been in the same room since you know, how many years? but guess what? we're all here, together. that's all that matters.""well, what does that mean?" tadashi asked."it means we're best friends." and maybe for the first time in years, tadashi agrees with his younger brother and understands that it really is that simple.only you can set my heart on fire"guys, let me out! this isn't funny!" she yelled as she banged on the bathroom door. "should we let her out?" tadashi asked and he looked at the crew with big grins on their faces. "nope, sorry, (y/n), you're not getting out from there for a while." "tadashi! please!" she started to kick the door, getting strange looks from people nearby. "(y/n), you gotta understand, we're not letting you leave sfit!" fred said. it was (y/n)'s big night and she was planning to present her robot for another school abroad. it was a dream of hers, to travel, to study abroad. it's all she ever wanted.but tadashi, hiro and their friends had other plans. they didn't want their best friend to leave. she'd understand one day.professor callaghan walked past and raised an eyebrow at the behaviour they were showing. "is everything alright?" he asked, getting nervous laughs out of them."everything's fine," gogo said. "just waiting for the person to come out of the toilet, that's all." "seems like they're really constipated-" hiro started, but was cut off by another loud bang behind the door. "uh, well," professor callaghan laughed awkwardly. "i'll leave you to it. by the way, have you seen (y/n)? some professors are waiting for her on stage, they've seen her records and academic awards and they're impressed. she can't miss it."tadashi started to push on the door more and finally got it to lock with a replica key. "that's taken care of," tadashi muttered."what was that?" professor callaghan asked. "oh, nothing!" tadashi said, rubbing the back of his neck and slipping the key in his pocket. "we haven't seen (y/n). maybe she's running late," wasabi said, directing his eyes to the entrance, trying to get professor callaghan to understand what he was saying."right! well," professor callaghan said, walking in the direction of the entrance. "i'll leave you to it. don't miss her big moment!" "we won't!" they all chimed - except for honeylemon.once their teacher was out of sight, they all let out a sigh. "uh, guys, don't you think this is a bit selfish? when you think about it, we are kind of crushing her dreams..." honeylemon hesitated, putting a strand of her hair behind her ear.the banging had stopped long ago and the statement made tadashi feel all weird inside. it was a bit selfish, he admitted, but, maybe she'll understand. one day. she had to. he was doing this for her, he was doing this for his friends, for himself. okay, okay, now that's definitely selfish. "(y/n) of san fransokyo institute of technology, please come up to the stage." silence fell around all of them, guilt hanging in the air. "(y/n) of san fransokyo institute of technology, please come up to the stage." "i've gotta get something from my moped, i'll be right back," tadashi said and hestitated before saying, "you can let her out." "but, tadashi-" hiro started but tadashi already left the building.tadashi made his way down the steps, looking in the distance for his red moped. he jogged over to it and breathed. he opened the seat up and revealed an envelope. inside the envelope was a plane ticket that would change (y/n)'s life forever. this is what was going to take her to the school of her dreams. he knew she would get in and the least he could do for her is buy her a plane ticket, one for himself and one for hiro when they wanted to visit her. the envelope had a single navy blue ribbon on it, addressed to her name. he picked it up from the moped's box and closed it behind him. he scanned over the envelope, sighing before his head shot up to the sound of the fire alarm. the expedition centre was already up in flames before he ran to the front of the building, his eyes reflecting the embers that flickered off the edges. he saw the team in the corner of his eye run out, rushing to him. "tadashi! she's still in there!" gogo shouted over the screams from the people escaping."i told you guys to let her out!" tadashi exclaimed, looking back at the building. "i tried to stop you, tadashi! you had the key but you were already gone!" hiro said.tadashi's breath hitched in his throat as he remembered. the key. it was in his pocket the whole time and she's still in there. trapped.he pushed the envelope to hiro's chest before he started to sprint towards the building as his horrified friends watched on, shouting for him to come back. he ignored his friend's pleas. "tadashi! no!" hiro shouted."(y/n)'s in there, someone has to help."i'll let you set the pace 'cause i'm not thinking straighttadashi felt the heat on his skin and the beats of sweat start to run down his temples before he even stepped foot in the centre. black ash danced amidst the bright flames as it started to burn everything in its path, leaving no mercy. it was like someone was screaming in his ear - deathly, deafening, terrifying.my head's spinning 'round and i can't see clear no morehe made his way to the centre's bathroom, shakily grabbing the key from his back pocket and tears swelled up in his eyes at the perfect timing. he struggled to get the key in, but when he did, the bathroom was filled with smoke to the rim. "(y/n)!" tadashi yelled as his chest burned, the embers hissing outside the door, trying to make their way inside. his heart sank as he saw her body slumped back against the wall, dried up, hot tears on her face. tadashi ripped off his cardigan and he picked her up, wrapping the arm of the cardigan around her mouth. he carefully walked over to the bathroom door, a burned down wooden column standing in his way. he kicked it over with his foot and jumped over it as he tried to sprint towards the exit. the violent flames was on the verge of taking them alive. tadashi swore that the florescent orange light was going to blind him. he saw the speck of light shining through from the entrance, making it his top priority to make his way there and that tiny light would save them. save her.the pandemonium of flames finally reached its breaking point and tadashi felt a burning force behind him.tadashi had third and fourth degree burns. he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. she had carbon monoxide poisoning. she was in a coma. what are you waiting for?"tadashi." the beeping from the monitor continues on."tadashi." he looks to his left and to the door but no one's there. when did hiro leave? "tadashi." he felt a squeeze on his hand, sending a burning shock through his body. love me like you do, love me like you dohe looked at the bed that no longer had a lifeless body lying on it. instead, he felt the weight of her eyes on him, burning into his skin with every second that passed. her eyes - he knew them better than he knew himself. he's missed her so much. and it felt like he was seeing stars."i'm so sorry," tadashi whispered, hot streaks falling from his cheeks onto her arms, burning into her scars. "i'm so, so, sorry." "tadashi," her voice broke. it broke like a wave - soft, crashing and he swore he could drown in it. her first words for ten years was his name and he didn't deserve that. touch me like you do, touch me like you do"god damn you, tadashi. i just can't be friends with you anymore. you ruined my life." she put her hand on the back of his neck, pulled him down, pressing her lips to his and it felt like striking matches in the middle of winter. it doesn't last long but their hearts are pounding so fast they had no idea when to pull away.but when they did, tadashi breathed out, "tell me you won't leave. tell me, if you had the chance, you wouldn't leave." "i won't. i'd die if i did," she chuckled and tadashi did too, resting his forehead on hers. he leans down and kisses her this time, mouths slick, open-mouthed, pouring their love and souls into each other, like nothing else in the world mattered or ever would again. what tadashi loved most about the both of them was how they would lose themselves in each other over and over and they would still never know the way. she always felt like the place he'd never been."what are you waiting for?"
