I was diagnosed with Separation Anxiety and Panic Disorder when I was 5 (I'm 14 now). I started taking medicine about a month after that and I am still on the same medicine, just a higher dose. I remember having to get my heart checked to make sure my heart was good and my anxiety was just causing it to skip a beat. Everything ended up being fine, although they did find that I still had a harmless heart murmur from when I was a baby. I started going to a counselor when I was seven and we kept on switching until we found a good one. I don't go to her anymore because my anxiety has gotten really better.
I've experienced lots of symptoms of anxiety. When I have a panic attack, I start to shake a lot, I get dizzy, my heart starts beating fast, my chest might start to hurt, I feel like the world is ending, and I'm hyperventilating. These are my normal symptoms of a panic attack although sometimes I will have others.
I have several coping techniques to help me calm down. Repetitive movements like rocking or tapping my knees help alot. Theres also a common grounding technique you can use.
5 things you see
4 things you touch
3 things you hear
2 things you smell
1 thing you taste
This is called 5-4-3-2-1 Coping technique. Taking a drink of water also helps. My fifth grade teacher taught me to lay right beside a wall and put my feet up on it.
If you get a panic attack at school, just tell your teachers and they will understand. Also, if you haven't already, tell your parents. Trust me, everyone will understand.
