"I wrote my first song when I was five years old. I taught myself how to play the guitar when I was nine," I said, nervously shifting in my seat. "Music was an outlet for me to deal with what was going on in my life. It was the only voice I had."
I took a deep breath. "When I was twelve, my sister Rachel died. All her life she had battled with cancer. Music was my lifesaver, I guess you could say."
I glanced up at him. He was watching me - studying me. I want to be real. This is the first step - bare it all.
"Growing up, while all the other kids were going out on the weekends, I was home - writing, practicing my vocal exercises. My family couldn't afford to put me through singing lessons, so I learned on my own. This means something to me. I had promised Rachel that I'd make it somehow. I was determined - I still am." I looked him dead in the eye. "I can do this. I'm hard-working."
His face shifted into a grin as he chuckled. "Niykee, you're here because I already want you on the label. You don't gotta prove yourself. You already did when you posted those Youtube videos."
A smile spread across my face. Diddy glanced over to Jimmy, who was seated on the other side of the table. "So should we talk contract?" he asked. Jimmy didn't hesitate to nod. I glanced over at Lauren, who was grinning from ear to ear.
Lauren is my manager but also my best friend. I call her LP.
She clears her throat, respectively. "We have a few conditions," she began. Both men turned their attention to her. "Niykee writes all her songs and she wants the rights to all of the lyrics she produces. She also wants control with what producers she works with. We're open to suggestions though. Bottom line: everything goes through both of us - we're a team."
I nodded in agreement. I couldn't have said it better myself.
The older men glanced at each other before nodding. "Sounds good to me," Diddy said. "How about I have legal write up the papers today and have you girls come by tomorrow afternoon to sign them?"
"Sounds great," I said. Everyone stood up from their seats. I stuck out my hand, first shaking Diddy's and then Jimmy's. "I don't know how to thank you guys."
"Just do your thang," Diddy said, smiling. "That's all we ask of you."
As LP and I exited the conference room, a thousand thoughts began to run through my mind. I did it. I did it, Rachel. This is for you.
"Oh my God," LP said, grabbing my arm once we were out of the room and down the hall. "I can't believe this just happened. Niykee, I'm so proud of you!" She gave me a quick hug. "You got to call your mom and tell her the news!"
She was right. Back home in Chicago, my mom was patiently waiting for my call. I dug through my cross-body purse until I found my gold Galaxy. I quickly punched in her number, waiting for the ringing sound. She picked up after the second ring.
"Niykee?" I heard her thick accent over the other line.
"Mom," I took a deep breath. "We're signing the contract tomorrow."
She began to scream excitingly in my ear. I laughed, glancing over at LP, who was admiring the large painted mural in front of us.
"Niykee, honey, I'm so proud of you! This is amazing news," she told me.
I grinned. "I know. I have no idea how I am not hyperventilating right now or even on the ground, fainted." I chuckled. "We're about to leave now though, so I'll give you a call when we get back to the hotel, alright?"
"Alright, sweet pea, I'll talk to you in a few." Before I hung up, I heard her say my name once more.
"Yeah?"
