It was the few minutes before getting home from school that Kyoya always enjoyed the most. Until the last day of school, the day the car pulled up to the door and his parents stood there waiting for him. They had the look. He knew the look, the ‘your father and I have something very important to say’ look. They walked him into the house, his mother still rambling about his day, and into the sitting room. “Go on and take a seat son.” his father said firmly. He sat in a lone chair across from theirs and pushed his glasses up his nose. His mother started saying something, but he wasn’t listening. He watched carefully as his father strained, he was hesitant about something and then quickly said, “Kyoya, your mother and I have chosen the woman we would like you to marry.” What a terrible way to begin summer.
“Miyuri your mother and I have been thinking” Miyuri knew what was coming next, she overheard her parents earlier that evening. She sighed and put her fork down, then looked up at her them. “Well we decided it was time to discuss your future, what you’re going to be after you get out of school.” Miyuri already didn’t like where this is going, “Our friends, the Ootori’s have a boy your age, and your mother and I were thinking –”
“Please tell me this isn’t what I think it is” She knew it was, she could feel it coming on for a while, she was really getting angry now. “Mi, we think it would be best for you, to be insured for your future.” Her father pleaded, her mom nodded and squeezed his hand across the table. “I don’t want to be a wife, I want to be me. I am not going to spend the rest of my life slaving for a man who won’t appreciate me.”
“I refuse to spend the rest of my life slaving for a girl who won’t appreciate me.” Kyoya said cooly, his parents glanced at each other. “We understand how you feel about this, we even went through it ourselves Kyoya, but look at how good your father and I are!” Kyoya didn’t believe in love, he despised it, his parents were one out of a million. He stood up and turned away, “we are going to have dinner with them tomorrow Kyoya, then you can formally meet your wife.”
The dress was tight, Miyuri struggled as one of the maids pushed the zipper up farther, she huffed and flopped on the chair next to her. “How do you like it dear?” Her mom asked, she glared at her and sighed, “I don’t know where you found this mother but I can’t breathe,” her mom giggled at her, “that’s the point honey, it’s to make you slimmer.” Ouch. “Mom these hips don’t come easy, or these boobs as a matter of fact.” Her mom smiled, “It’s Versace.” Ok mom, like that justifies anything. Maybe a little.
She kept her eyes on her cell as they drove, just to spite them. She was nervous, and anxious, she wasn’t ready to get married and here she was meeting the guy the day after her parents dropped the news.
It took an hour for Kyoya’s parents to convince him to put on a suit, until his father pulled the ‘unprofessional’ card. It got him every time. He stood by the door with them, counting the seconds as they passed by. A flash of lights streamed through the glass door, this was it. He prepared his apology speech, how his plans for his future didn’t include some doe-eyed school girl. Time seemed to slow down as his parents opened the door, they greeted the man and woman, and behind them stood the most beautiful girl Kyoya Ootori has ever seen.
She stood there staring at the ground, and it seemed as if it took years for her eyes to meet his, his heart pounded in his chest, his face grew hot. His father nudged his arm and he gulped, he reached forward for her hand and she stared at it for a few moments, before pushing it aside and walking past him.
