Lucas’s POV

“Don’t worry, Mrs Daynard, the police will find Holly and bring her back to us safely.” I reassure Holly’s mum. She has been on edge ever since Holly didn’t return home from her trip to my house, three days ago. It’s my fault that Holly was taken. I shouldn’t have let her walk home! I’m so irresponsible…she’s probably dead because of me!

Mrs Daynard looks up at me, with tears in her eyes, and says, “I hope so.” It makes me so sad to see her like this. She’s usually a lively soul. I stand up and walk to one of the officers. Maybe they know something.

   “Any leads?” I ask, desperately.

“Not yet.” this officer has such a serious face it’s hard to believe that he’s human.

I wish I could go back to that night and drive her home!

The officers’ phone rings and after his discussion he turns to face me and says, “We do have something. Two days ago she was sighted with a man at the train station. They were said to have gone to Ashwood.”

“Ashwood?” I ask. I’ve never heard of it.

“It’s one of those rough neighbourhoods. We have quite a lot of drug dealers that have been arrested from that side of town.” He replies with furrowed eyebrows.

“Did anyone see her return with him?!” I question, my heart racing.

He nods. “We’ve used the pictures from the train station and put them on TV so that if anyone sees them they’ll know that he has kidnapped her and will call us.”

I thank him then go and sit on the couch. I hope that she’s alright. While on the couch I see two officers talking in whispers. What are they talking about? I think. I approach them and lean against the wall nearby trying to act inconspicuous.

“Should we tell Officer Caprio what we know?” The tall, skinny one asks.

Looking around, the muscular one murmurs, “I don’t know. He might overreact. But it is pretty important.”

“I think we should.” The tall one says, his voice is high and pitchy like a birds’ call.

“Alright, but you’ll have to do it. I don’t wanna get in trouble.” Their argument goes on for quite a while before I interrupt.

“Excuse me, officers, but I think that I can be of service. Clearly neither of you wants to tell officer Caprio your important information so I can tell him for you. Just tell me what it is and I’ll help.” I offer. They look convinced and soon nod at me.

“Alright,” the muscular one says, “We know the whereabouts of the missing girl.”

   My eyes open wide.

“Well, where is she?!” I say harshly. When I know where she is I can go and rescue her.

“Do you know the abandoned warehouse between the train station and the Crypton Bridge?” he doesn’t wait for my answer, “Well they’re there.”

“And you know this for a fact, do you?”

“Well, no. Not exactly. But the car that was driven to the station and back is parked out front of that building.” Skinny says.

“Ok, you two can go. I’ll tell Caprio, don’t worry.” I lie. Who cares about telling the officer I need to rescue Holly!

I’m almost out of the door when officer Caprio stops me, “Where are you going?” he asks raising an eyebrow.

“My dad will be worried if I don’t get home soon.” I say, calmly.

He nods his head and says, “Get going then. But don’t go too far, we’ll keep in touch with you.” He looks at me suspiciously then walks to the other officers.

I leave quickly and jump into my car. I do everything so rushed; I just need to fix what I have done. I race down the freeway and make it to Crypton Bridge.

While I’m on the bridge I look out for the warehouse. A thought pops into my head about the police officers that I was talking to before; they were way to easily manipulated. This makes me worry about the police force altogether. I hope that the rest of the cops are more educated than those two.

There’s the warehouse! I see it at the end of the bridge. She has to be there.

I park next to an SUV. I’m guessing this is the car the other guys were talking about.

I probably should have come more prepared for this.

I walk to the door of the warehouse and open it but part of me doesn’t want to see what's inside. She could be badly hurt or worse; dead! When I've forced it ajar the doorway is just the beginning of the dark. And I don’t know what is in that dark.

With bated breath I take a step through the door and try to see through the blackness.

“Holly?” I ask. After there is no reply I repeat, “Holly?”

From the tiny light that leaks through the door I see a hand holding something long. I turn to look at what it is but it's too quick. I take a blow to the head and fall to the floor. My head is spinning and I feel hot liquid rolling down my face. The last thing I see is red before my eyes shut.
