Peter smiled at me. His wide, sunny grin that could make the heart full and easy.
"Where you heading after this?", he asked bounding over to me like a puppy.
"To sleep", I said primly as I shoved my tattered physiology textbook into my duffel.
He threw his arm around me as we walked down the long cobbled road, the crisp evening air of London singing it's mellow song.
"Come on", he said. "A drink down at Olives. On me"
Olives was the tiny, wooden pub near our university where all the students flocked to.
I rose a brow at him. He stared down at me smiling cheekily, the caramel curls that fell across his face bobbed happily, his amber eyes aglow with hopefulness.
"Absolutely not", I told him. "I spent the whole night studying-"
And working. But I didn't tell him that she worked at the up and coming club called The Silver Serpent.
"You can study later", he said loudly, scaring a few piegons into freaked flight.
I pursed my lips. "See what you did"
His smile turned cheeky. "Yes. You see those birds are in agreement with me as they are on their way to Olives as we speak! Guiding us-"
"Actually they aren't", I pointed to the flock in the sky. "They are heading in the direction to Cheshire's Bakery"
He frowned. "Damned birds"
"Alright one drink", I chuckled tapping his arm. "But after that I need to head home"
He grinned and as we walked down the familiar road we spoke of how carrier pigeons must've really sucked at delivering messages in the olden days.Petra, my boss, called me the minute I changed into a baggy sweatshirt after the comfort of a hot shower against my back.
"Lola caught a cold and I can't have the girl dancing mid-sneeze! Please come in right now, Seia."
I wanted to rip out my hair and smash something but I ground my teeth and take a few deep breaths. As much as Petra was a good, understanding boss, I couldn't help feel the urge to blaggard the woman to her face. But I couldn't and I, quite honestly, wouldn't; she had given me this job when I had really needed money despite me having zero experience or any dance classes. Of course she had me trained for a week and made me do simple group routines initially but as I grew to learn the works of the pole and of my own body, building upper body strength and being able to sway my hips, I was able to gain more from her respect. And all I had ever wanted was respect. It was something I had never got.
Sighing and chugging the coffee I had made for myself, I packed my bag and made my way to The Silver Serpent.I shadowed my eyes into a sinful purple that matched the body tight suit that left little to the imagination. Leaving my hair loose and open in its wavy, dark curls that reached my tailbone, I walked to the main stage and preformed like it was second nature. A part of me shivered at the possibility of falling or tumbling or forgetting the moves but I clamped the doubt down. I really didn't need it when I had to swing my entire body around the cold metal pole.
The sounds of hoots and praising shouts was enough for me to know that I was executing Petra's instructions correctly. As the song came to swelling end, I landed smoothly into a perfect split and felt the lights crown me.
And I saw all the eyes on me.
And then I saw the most beautiful pair staring back at mine.-
