Chapter One
"Wake up, honey. You've got to leave for school in twenty minutes," my dad said, pouring water onto my face.
I gasped and shot up, staring at him like he was a wild animal.
"What?" he asked.
"You didn't even warn me!" I screamt.
"I did, the last five times I tried waking you up," he said. "You didn't even budge."
I glared at him and scowled before getting off the bed and entering the bathroom.
When I was done bathing, I came out and changed into blue skinny jeans and a slightly oversized shirt with blue, red and white checks. Then I pulled on my shoes, picked up my bag and went downstairs, where my dad was.
"Here," he said, handing me a plate of pancakes. I greedily fed on them and then washed my plate clean.
When I was done, I glanced at the clock. Nineteen minutes? Where's my page in the Guinness Book of World Records?
"Let's go," Dad said, picking up the keys from the counter and leading me out of the house. I shut the door after me.
We drove to the school and reached within five minutes. The walk would probably take about fifteen. I memorized the route so I would be able to return by myself.
My dad pulled up outside the school and said, "Good luck."
I smiled at him and replied, "Thanks." I turned to open the door, but then felt his hand tap my shoulder. I turned to see him holding up a pair of keys. "House keys. I'll probably be home by eight. You should finish unpacking today."
I nodded and took the keys from him before opening the door and getting out of the car. I shut the door behind me and waved him off.
When he was gone, I turned around and headed towards the large building make of red brick, with 'Fernwood High' mounted on the entrance.
There was no one outside, so I was guessing I was slightly late.
I entered the school and followed every sign leading me to the office.
"Hi, I'm Alana Samson. I'm the-"
"The new student? Here you go," said the receptionist, handing me a schedule and some other papers.
"Thank you," I said, leaving the office. My first period was English Lit. I headed towards my class, sighing when I reached the end of the hallway and entered it.

I made friends with a pretty red head named Valerie, who shared with me almost all of my classes. At lunch, I got to meet all of her friends who were kind and welcoming. Their names were Diane, Allie, Holly and Sam. They were typical girls. They told me all about the school's hot couple, its muscular soccer team, and the game that evening, which I apparently had to attend. I didn't mind. I quite liked soccer, more than baseball anyway.
"Bye girls!" I said, as we exited the school's gates after the last bell. I waved them off and saw them all stuff themselves into a red car. They were off to the mall. They had invited me, but I said that I had plans after school. And I did.
My body had started to look like a potato. I needed to exercise. After the divorce, I had stopped my dance classes and my gymming. I knew there wouldn't be dance classes I could attend here, but I definitely could go out for a run in the woods.
I quickly walked home and changed into tracks and a tank top. I pulled my hair up in a pony tail and grabbed my jacket, phone and earphones before leaving.
It was 5 o'clock when I left. I saved my house's location on my GPS before heading towards the forest, which was just at the end of the street, beyond a little burnt grass. I started jogging when I entered the forest and plugged in my earphones. I just kept going forward, instead of taking any turns and confusing myself.
After a while, I reached a clearing in the forest. It seemed to be empty. However, when I approached it, I saw the fresh water lake there. It was beautiful. I stood above it, gazing out at the lovely scenery of green mountains above the lake. I pulled out my phone and turned off the music, wanting to enjoy the silence. I then took a picture of the lovely scene.
I sighed and sat down near the lake on the green grass that surrounded it. For a while, I just enjoyed watching the sun set into the green mountains, leaving behind a purple tinge in the sky.
Suddenly, I heard a twig snap behind me. I wouldn't be surprised to know that other people came to the forest to jog, but I turned around to see who it was anyway.
In the beginning, I saw no one. But it was starting to get dark so someone could be lurking in the shadows. I decided to go back, knowing these woods could be home to wild animals. I stood up and turned around, only to see a huge, grey and white wolf strut out into the clearing and snarl at me.
Fear and adrenaline filled me up as I tried to think of what I could do. I tried to stay calm, knowing it could sense fear, but it didn't work. Chills ran through my body at the thought of being eaten alive. I silently prayed that some hunter of sort was around to save me, but I knew there were hardly any chances.
Therefore, I decided to run. I could escape the place if I was able to distract it for a few seconds.
In a flash, I bent down and picked up a stone. The wolf charged towards me and I struck its hind leg, fortunately managing to get it. It whimpered and I took the chance to run away. However, I was barely out of the clearing when it was at my heel.
I had no plan now except to run, so I did just that, ignoring the searing pain in my legs, which were constantly being told to go faster.
Suddenly, I heard a loud howl come from nearby. I turned to see that the wolf had stopped running, and another one appeared from the trees next to me, followed by a man, who was wearing only shorts.
My legs stopped running when I saw him. It was almost automatic.
The man seemed strange, but extremely attractive. A fiery hot spark ran through me as I stood mesmerized by his gaze. He was so handsome. His sandy hair was messy and his green eyes swirled with what seemed like desire. I couldn't look away from him. The wolves were suddenly non-existent. As a matter of fact, I took notice of nothing around me except him. I didn't even understand why I was so attracted to him.
Sure, he had an eight pack, a very delicious V-line leading to his pants-and it didn't help that his gaze seemed to reciprocate the desire in my mind, but I didn't even know this man. And he was a footstep away from two giant wolves.
Who was he? And why was he staring me down? How was he not running for his life?
I was about to ask him all that, but then he said, "Mate." And let out a shrill growl, causing the wolves to howl once again.
At the sight of them howling, my fear rolled in again and I took off, hoping the man would be safe too. But if he liked the company of wolves, who was I to stop him from being with them?
