Jordana Ruth Garrison woke up that Monday morning just like every other day: reluctantly.

She was an average-looking girl: 5'5'', straight black hair that ran past her shoulders, black eyes, and a large nose that she had always hated.

She trudged down the steps of her loft bedroom, decorated with light blue cotton and paint swirls to resemble a sky palace. When she entered the kitchen, she saw her mother at the stove, and smelled fried eggs steaming on the pan in front of her.

"Good morning, Jordie."

"Morning, Ma." She reached across the island and dropped a slice of bread into the toaster.

Her mother lifted the spatula in her hand and flipped a fried egg onto a plate, then extracted the toast and placed it on the side. Jordana took the plate from her mother, placed the egg on the toast, and took a large bite.

She ate in silence while her mother made the other egg into an omelet.

"Sweetie, don't forget to talk to your teacher today. You need to find a way to make up that test grade. Ask for extra credit if you have to."

"I know, Ma. I'll get it fixed." She finished eating and got up.

"I'm going to go up and get ready, love you." She put her empty plate in the sink and went back to her room. This time, she noticed something was different.

Hanging on the back of her desk chair, was an off-white tote bag with dark green straps, like an environment preservation-promoting bag her mother had picked up at the farmer's market. Except this bag said "Recruitment Program" in bold black letters. "Ma," she called down, "did you put this bag in my room?"

"No, why?"

She ran through the situation in her head before choosing her answer. "Nothing." She walked over to the desk and carefully took the bag from the chair. She opened it slowly and inspected its contents: A leather-bound booklet that appeared to be handmade, a black marble, and a black metal rod.

Strange. She pulled out the booklet. She opened to the first page, titled: "Introduction", it read:

Jordana Garrison,

You are now a part of something bigger than yourself. You don't have a choice, it's for the sake of the world. The Five Immortal Gods have inhabited the souls of five children, and you are one of them. You will be meeting up with your soul siblings at the location marked on the map in two days. Please bring your recruitment bag with you. I know this is a lot of information, and I will explain in more detail when I see you. I will be seeing you soon, I imagine. Until then, take care, and be prepared.

Thomas Halloway

Jordana was shocked. This was too much information. She changed into a t-shirt and jeans with a sweatshirt while still in a daze.

Jarring her from her thoughts, the doorbell rang and she heard voices from below. She walked back down, grabbing her backpack on the way, in which she'd packed her water bottle, the recruitment bag, and some other supplies.

She was shocked to see a boy about 15, her age, standing just inside the door, chatting happily with her mother.

"Ma?" she asked, coming closer.

The conversation stopped as both of them looked at her. The boy had short brown hair and soft brown eyes. He wore a gray t-shirt with a clothing brand name on it, the shirt clinging to his muscular frame. Jordana couldn't deny he was attractive, but she averted her gaze.

Her mother smiled. "Jordie, your friend from school came to pick you up!"

The boy waved shyly, but looked at her with a knowing glance. "Hi, my name's Thomas, remember?"

Thomas. She thought. Thomas Halloway.

She plastered on a fake smile and approached him. "Oh hey, Thomas! Let's get going."

Jordana's mother walked them out and teased her quietly. When they were at the bottom of the steps, Thomas turned around and waved at her mother. "Goodbye, Francine!" her mother blushed and waved, while Jordana held back a gag.

"So what's going on?" Jordana asked as soon as her mother closed the door.

His face turned serious and he looked meaningfully into the distance. "Show me the marble."

Jordana was confused, but remembered the recruitment bag and pulled out the solid black marble. In front of her eyes, it swirled and turned blue. She gasped and dropped it in the grass.

Thomas bent down and picked it up, staring at it in amazement. "How could I be so lucky?" he muttered. "Miss Garrison," he raised his voice and turned to face her, "you are part of the New Immortal Gods. The god who has inhabited your soul is the most powerful; the leader. You possess the power of the Mind."
