Christmas was... awkward... to say the least.
Auntie Mae was of course the first to notice, and say something.
"Oh my goodness, look at your hair!" She had exclaimed. Then, in her version of a whisper (which everyone could hear) she leaned over to me and said:
"Liking the girls now, are we?"
I was mortified. My parents almost didn't take me because they knew she would do something like this. But why miss out on family time just because of one obnoxious relative? Besides, its only for a week, how bad can it be? Oh was I a fool.
Everyone had stopped conversing, eager to hear my answer. My father glared at me, daring me to correct her as to what was really going on. My mom pleading with me to get it over with now so we didn't have to return so many gifts and people would just not give them to me in fear of offending. But I did what I did best. I didn't say a word. Mom to the rescue.
"Oh nonsense, Maebell. She got gum stuck in her hair on the way here. we had to chop it all off it was in such an obvious place." Everyone was convinced. I wasn't a lesbian, I wasn't going to bring a girlfriend or a wife to any future gatherings. It was just gum. From that moment on, Auntie Mae didn't talk to me in front of others. That night she came to my room with a picture.
"This is my best friend Steven and I during college." She stated as she sat down on my bed. She handed me the picture. A man had his arm thrown across a young Auntie Mae's shoulder. He had sort of a baby face. No stubble or anything. His hair was a soft brown, spiked up. He was smaller than her, kind of chubby. I looked back to her.
"He's like you." She said. I blinked. How did she...?
"Oh don't worry honey. I won't tell nobody you don't want me to. I understand how hard this can be. Steven had tried to commit twice before he turned the age of 17 because his parents were so against him." My eyes started to burn. No crying, god you're so weak.
"A-auntie Mae?" I looked up at her. She smiled somberly and scooted over to my side. She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and I leaned in.
"It's okay honey. I'm here." She stroked my hair and I let a tear fall.
"I'm so scared." I whispered to her.
"I know honey. But do you want to know something?" She asked. I nodded my head. She shifted a bit and pulled out her phone. After scrolling a bit, she showed me the screen. It was of a man, about in his thirties. His brown hair was cropped, he was well muscled, stubbled chin, big smile.
"This is Steven now." She said. I stared at the picture in awe.
"No way." I mumbled. She smirked and nodded.
"Yep. The miracles of Testosterone and top surgery." She swiped to another picture. Steven with his arms around another man, a baby in their arms. "He can finally be happy."
More tears fell. I was in shock. How to you react to that kind of thing? Auntie Mae just cooed and hugged me again. She didn't let go until we fell asleep.
