Kyra got onto the plane, sliding in between Jade and Rune. She leaned over and whispered something to Jade before the pilot announced that the plane was taking off.
"Jade, I've never been on a plane before! This is so exciting! And, as a bonus, I get to sit next to Rune!" Kyra quickly glanced over to make sure Rune, her crush all through high school, didn't hear. "I can't believe that we get to go to Hawaii on our senior trip!" That time she said it not in a whisper, but loud enough that people turned around and glared at her.
Jade and Rune laughed, as did Jayson and Chaiia, two of Kyra's friends. They all knew that Kyra could be a little loud without realizing it.
"Kyra, you really don't know how to be quiet sometimes." Rune laughed lightly and looked out the window. Kyra just shook her head with a smile and took out her laptop, working on one of her books. Jade leaned over, trying to be sneaky, but Kyra saw her and quickly closed her laptop, glaring at Jade.
"Kyra!" Jade narrowed her eyes at Kyra, smiling slightly. "Are you writing another book?"
Kyra looked at her sheepishly. "Maybe... But it isn't any of your business, Jade. Leave me alone." Kyra started laughing, and soon Jade joined her.
"Hey, guys, is there supposed to be a little bit of steam coming off of the wing?" Rune looked out the window again and seemed very concerned. Soon, all of the friend group was leaning over to the window to see them over water, no land in sight, with a steaming wing.
"I'm sure it's nothing. We're going to be fine." Laila, a girl who was sitting in front of them, said quietly. "The people that design the planes know what they're doing."
The friends all sat back down, an air of stress and worry hindering their conversation. It wasn't too long later that Rune looked out the window again.
"Hey, guys, I think that there might be something wrong with the plane." When everyone looked out the window again, they saw that there was even more steam, and it looked a little black.
"You might be right." Chaiia went back to her seat and buckled her seatbelt. "We should probably buckle up just in case." The rest of them all buckled up as she recommended, when Laila piped up again from in front of them.
"I said it before and I'll say it again. Everything is okay. The plane is fine. It's noth-" A huge boom came from the other side of the plane, shaking everything. As the plane spiraled down, depending on the wing that the group of friends had been looking at, the pilot finally said something.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have an emergency on our hands. Please stay calm and-" A second explosion sounded as the other engine burst into flames. Kyra started to scream when she felt someone take her hand. She looked to her right, and Rune was looking at her, fear in his eyes.
"Hold on to me. Something even worse is about to happen. Do the same for Jade and tell her to spread the word." Kyra nodded and whispered the same to Jade, when suddenly the plane split in half, sending Laila and her row of seats spinning off into the blue. Kyra saw an island not too far away from where they were going to land.
"Guys, I have a plan. When I say so, unbuckle and jump! We're going to swim to that island!" Kyra got her hand in position to unbuckle. "3...2...1...GO!" She unbuckled and jumped, followed by her friends and many of her classmates. As soon as she hit the water, she started swimming towards shore.
"We're going to make it! We're going to-" A piece of the plane hit Kyra and knocked her out. She started sinking in the water when someone grabbed her arm and pulled her up, towing her as they swam to shore. When they finally got there, Rune started checking her vital signs, the way they had learned in health class. He turned her on her side, relieved when she started coughing up water. When he knew she was going to be alright, he ran back to the water to help others get to shore. Kyra sat up, only to start blacking out again. Her last thought was one of wonder, the question of who was grabbing her and running off with her.
