It had been a week since the incident and with every passing day, Sarah found, something changed. Be it the loudness her phone, her sight in the night or her heightened sense of smell. Sarah was sure, it had something to do with the incident, with the wound inflicted on her by this guy. If it weren't for the lack of bloodlust, she would have thought, he had somehow turned her into a vampire too.
Right now, she laid awake in her bed. The only light came from the moon shining through the window and yet, Sarah saw almost perfectly. Sure, the colors were muted and faded, but the silhouettes were clear to her like they would have been in daylight. It made her uncomfortable, but she didn't tell anyone. While she knew they wouldn't just send her to the next asylum, she didn't want to risk it. Sarah dreaded the moment someone found out.
She turned to her side and tried to close her eyes. They just fluttered open. "Of course", she sighed and buried her face in the pillow. Even her brother slept soundly as evidenced by the silence. Sarah didn't have a clue as to how late it was as she hadn't looked at her phone. It was night, this was all she knew.
The best thing to do would be telling her family about this. Despite knowing they wouldn't do anything bad, Sarah still feared it. She didn't want to dwell on it.
In this moment, it was like the heavens heard the prayer, because the sound of shattered glass echoed through the silence. Sarah jerked up. Her instinct told her to investigate immediately. Maybe the guy had broken into the house and finish the job. This would get her some answers she longed for. But her mind told her to stay where she was. So, she listened to the it.
Someone ran past her room and soon thundered down the stairs. Sarah stood up and walked to her door. However, she didn't open it. Instead she put her ear on the wood and heard a familiar yet muffled voice bellowing. "Who are you? What are you doing in this house?!" A bad feeling burrowed in her stomach when she heard another noise. This time it sounded like crashing wood. Sarah bit her lip and thought about what she should do now.
"Puny human. You really think I can be defeated by you? My powers exceed those of yours by miles", a different voice yelled. Then a cry of agony reverberated through the house. There was someone downstairs who pummeled Elijah. Sarah felt conflicted. It would be best for her own survival to stay here. Yet, she couldn't just leave her brother to get beaten to death. Not to mention that this guy saw himself above a human. It clicked in her head. This intruder had to be a supernatural being, like the one who had attacked her a week ago.
Another scream boomed through the house. Without hesitation Sarah slammed the door open and dashed down the stairs, almost flying over them. She noticed the metallic scent when she reached the scene. It sent a shiver down her spine.
A flashlight illuminated a portion of the room. Sarah saw the destroyed dinner table. Her brother laid on the debris, trying to push himself up. "Elijah", she cried and rushed over to him. She paid no attention to the stranger. The smell of blood intensified. She felt how saliva built up in her mouth. Something inside her pushed forward a strange and unfamiliar urge to the forefront of her mind. Sarah shook her head, trying to get rid of it. Another scent entered the scene. It was both familiar yet unknown for Sarah.
Human flesh.
"Sarah?" This snapped her back. She wiped her mouth with the sleeves of her shirt. This wasn't the right moment to think about how delicious human flesh would taste. In fact, there was no moment in which this would ever be right. But it stung in her nose either way. She pushed it back and focused on this situation.
Glancing over shoulder, Sarah acknowledged the guy standing there, watching the scene with a smile. Elijah meanwhile propped himself into a sitting position. "Sarah! What are you doing here", he whisper-yelled. His brows knitted until there were prominent lines between them. "You have to leave!" Indignation was the first thing she felt when he said those words. It stayed for a few seconds until it was replaced by worry. "Not in a million years. I'm helping you", she replied. Elijah grunted and opened his mouth to say something. Before he could do so however, someone else did.
