It was an exceptionally cold day, the December breeze giving no thought to the boy sitting on the curb without a jacket. His name was Scott, and he had just returned home from school. He forgot his house key and was locked out, a regular occurrence. His mother would be home within an hour, he knew, so he waited. As he sat there he thought of his brother, Joey, who was in sixth grade, three grades fewer than himself. Joey always got out of school a few hours later than Scott so he never had to worry about getting locked out, everyone was home when he arrived. Scott pulled his phone to text his mom. He sent her the message, "I forgot my key again, it's freezing out." She never responded to his texts, but he knew she received them.
When Scott looked up from his phone he froze in shock. There was a tall man standing across the street from him. He wore a black suit and tie, seeing someone in which was very uncommon around where Scott lived. His attire, however, was not the most unusual thing about the man. His face, or lack of one rather, was completely white, pale... blank. His hands were the same chalk white as his face and descended from almost unnaturally long arms. He just stood there, motionless, if he could see without any eyes he would have been staring directly at Scott.
Scott stared back at the man, neither moving for what felt like hours. Suddenly, Scott heard a car coming down the street, which was rare because he lived in an exceptionally lifeless part of town. He glanced to his right to see his mother's car driving towards the house, and when he looked back across the street the man was gone. He wondered if he had just been seeing things. He couldn't have been, that man had been real, he knew it.
As his mother pulled into the driveway he stood up and walked over to her car. When she got out he asked, "did you see a man across the street?"
She shook her head, "no, why?" He opened his mouth to answer, but before he could say anything he started stumbling backwards until he fell to the ground, unconscious.
When he awoke he was in his bed, and the last thing he remembered was his vision blurring until everything was black. He assumed his mother had brought him inside and carried him to his room. However, he wasn't quite sure, as she wasn't a very strong person. Before he could put any more thought into the matter, he heard screams of absolute terror coming from outside his window.
He got up to inspect the situation. Peering out the window he saw a small child, about six or seven years old, and a tall, faceless man. He now knew for sure that the man was real, he had imagined nothing.
