Ch. I Saray
No." I laughed, emanating an unattractive snort in the process.
"I'm serious, Saray." Chided my dearest and best-est friend Gloria, "You need to find yourself a man. You're 20 years old for crying out loud! Not to make you sound old or anything but you have been on this very planet for two decades. Two whole decades, Saray!"
She's always been jealous of the fact that I was born first. Our age was only gapped by ten minutes. Oh, I forgot to mention...We're twins. Identical twins. And I knew full well that we- plural, not singular- had been on God's green Earth for two whole long decades. I was also fully aware of the fact that I hadn't had a boyfriend sense high school.
I guess that's a long time these days.
"Look, Gloria, I know how old you are. This means I know how old I am. Which also means; I know how long I have been alive. You do not need to remind me that I am indeed out a boyfriend. Why do I need a boyfriend again?"
Gloria looked at me with a 'duh' look, dark eyebrow raised towards the night sky. "So you can get engaged, get married, and have my nieces and nephews." Then she added the 'duh'- more power to her words, I guess.
"Gloria, we have talked many time about this...I am not in the market for a boy-" Suddenly the air was knocked from my lungs as something large slammed into my back, causing me to do a face plant with the side walk.
"Saray!"
The unmistakable weight of a body was crushing my face painfully into the ground. But soon after the weight lifted and I rolled onto my back and had my eye about jabbed out by a rather large finger.
"Sorry," said a booming male voice. I then took the large callused hand that had originally be out stretched to help me up- not poke out my eyeball- and was hosted up onto my two left feet.
"Oh, it's" I looked around puzzled, "fine?" He had just been here, right? Oh, God, that's it. I'm officially loosing it. As I straitened my clothing out and flattened down my hair, two men running at full speed pushed past me, causing me to wobble on the balls on me feet. If not for Gloria's quick hands which shot out and caught me by the shoulders, I would have had a second go at the cemented side walk. Spinning around once I caught my balance, I watched with wide eyes as I saw a glimpse of dark hair disappear around a corner of one of the allies and soon after the two men in black suits doing the same.
Acting as if my phone was buzzing, I whipped it out and placed it to my ear, "Hello? Oh, I see...No, I'll be right over." I fixed Gloria with a hard stare.
She stared right back with one eyebrow above the other, "Saray? What are you doing?"
"Yes, you too. See you in a bit." I acted like I hung up the phone. "Sorry, Gloria, it looks like something's come up. Go on home. I'll come by later this evening."
"Alright." She sighed, "I'll see you later then." And just like that, after giving me a hug, Gloria walked in the direction of our parent's house while I took off towards the ally. Why? No clue. I just had to know what was happening. Curiosity was sure to be the death of me. It looked like that man, the first one who bumped into me, was in some kind of trouble.
Skidding around the corner, I flew down the ally until my foot caught on something and I fell with a roll to the very unsanitary ground. Groaning, I turned on my now scraped up elbows to see what I had tripped over. A startled cry escaped my lips as I stared at the body facing me with its squinted blue eyes as it lay curled up on the ground. Blood dripped from the corner of the man's mouth as he let out an exhausted moan.
