"It was an accident woman. No need to accuse me, I've had enough of that for a day," Charles replies.
Are they fighting again?
Okay, that is my cue. I have to investigate.
For the boys!
I open the door wider, making sure that it does not make any screeching noises. The two are still arguing so it should be easy for me to move closer to the living room door. I have to make sure I hide myself so that they do not see me. It could raise their suspicions.
"What about the children Charles? Don't you care about them?" Shamiso yells the questions.
"What kind of a man do you take me for? Of course I care, I should be asking you that," he says calmly. A little too calmly.
"Please! If you cared even the slightest bit then you wouldn't be doing this to them. To me!"
"Shami listen. I don't know what you're not understanding here. I said it was an accident. That brat just wants to turn you against me."
Wait, is he talking about me? Did he just call me a brat. The nerve of that man.
"Leave her out of this. And she never told me anything, I found out long before she lived here," Shamiso says.
"If that's the case then why are you confronting me now huh? I tell you, that witch was sent here to separate us. Why won't you believe me?" He asks.
Witch? Seriously? This guy is crazy.
"I didn't confront you because I thought you would get back to your senses and stop. And tell me, what would Grace gain from separating us?"
"She's a devil! She wants the children! Maybe that's why Israel likes her, she's put a curse on him."
I snort. It is not my fault that he is hated by his own son.
"Now you're just being absurd Charles. Ko unopenga here? (Are you crazy?) What makes you think she's evil? She's the sweetest girl I've ever met. And if she wanted us dead, don't you think she would have killed us a long time ago?"
Exactly!
"She's attempted to. Shami, the bruises on my face couldn't have come from me bumping into a door. She possessed me! I hear her speaking to demons when she thinks we're not in the room. I swear-"
"Don't swear on lies Charles. Maybe she just talks to herself, it happens to people sometimes and I see what you're doing. You're shifting the blame to that poor girl when you're the rotten one," She says angrily.
"For the last time, it was an accident woman! It just happened."
"Just happened huh? You're a married man! It can't just happen!"
"Oh you're one to talk huh? You're not as innocent as you show to us, you really think I don't know?"
What could he possibly mean by that?
"Don't turn this on me. You're a monster Charles," she spits.
"Okay that's enough! You better shut your bloody mouth," Charles says lowly.
He sounds mad.
"Or what Charles? What will you do to me?" Shamiso says provocatively.
"I said shut up Shamiso!"
Since I got here, this is the first time I am hearing him call her by her full name. He must be furious, and if he could hurt me when he was angry, he could do the same to her without a doubt.
"Hit me Charles! I know you want to! Just do it!" She screams. This wakes up the babies. Their piercing screams echo the whole house but no one seems to care.
"Shamiso," he growls.
"Hit me! Just-" She is cut off by a slap.
"You think you can disrespect me?"
Slap. "I won't allow-"
Slap. "-a woman-"
Slap. "-to speak to me-"
Slap. "-like this-"
Slap. "-in my house!"
Slap.
Throughout the assault, Shamiso is screaming, pleading with Charles to stop. She is crying, and so are the babies but he still continues, and I know that I have to do something. I grab the closest object I can find and march into the living room.
"Charles stop!" I scream, pointing the lamp at him.
Pathetic, I know.
