She was staring out over the city, watching the people. They were simple to her, ordinary people living their ordinary lives. They are bland, mere toys. However, these ordinary things are sentient, and feel things beyond her kind's comprehension. They act like it's a big deal, but these so-called emotions only serve more grief than joy. They are only to get in the way. They are not needed. How could they let their own desire for their interests overpower their potential?
To this, she never fully had an answer. Not like she needed one anyways. She couldn't care less for humanity, and always thought of them as meaningless. That is, of course, 'till she came across him.
He was so...she didn't even have a word for it. Different? Understandable? Strange?
When she was given over to him, the first thought that came across her mind was wooooow, some screaming, loud, excited, dirty, grabby idiot. But, really, he was the exact opposite. He just sat there, staring at her, the only sound coming from him being slow breathing. He looked different from all the rest, was actually pretty tidy, and kept his distance from her. The world seemed to fade around them. She could still vividly recall the exact conversation that was the first of many.
They both had been staring at the other for at least 10 minutes before she formed the mental connection.
(♧ for Hattie, ♡ for Bede)
♧ ....hi?
♡ Hi....
♧ Are...you okay?
♡ I'm fine. You?
♧ Confused? Why are you...so much more calm then the rest of these....kids?
♡ That's just the way I am. Sorry.
♧ No! I mean-you...don't have to be...
♡ ...
♧ So...uhhhh.....what's your name?
♡ ...
♧ Ummmm....
♡ ...Bede
♧ Okay....hi Bede?
♡ Hi. I don't know your name.
♧ I don't have one?
♡ That's not right.
♧ It isn't?
♡ How could it be? Every one of your people is called the same name?
♧ I.....guess I never thought of it like that...
♡ How about Hattie?
♧ Huh?
♡ Hattie. Do you want me to call you that? It's okay if you don't.
♧ Uhm...ok...I like it...
♡ Okay then.
She's almost certain that the conversation will stay with her until the end of time. Before him, she was filled with the same ideals as her predecessors. But then? She was confused. Were not all humans the same? Were they all like him? After some time, she learned that was not the case. Other humans were different, yes, but not in a positive light. Some were loud, some were idiots, and some were downright disgraces.
And always, she came right back to her first friend. Her only friend. Because he was so much more than the rest. Where others were dense, he understood. Where others were loud, he kept his inside voice. Where others were open about how they felt, he kept everything closed in. And that was the one thing that always bothered her.
She didn't even know why.
Every time he neutralized himself, she grew what she assumed to be what anger was. Every time he distanced himself, she felt hurt, though no wounds were present. There was only one time when he truly lost it. And she never wants to remember it again.
The tears were too much, the screaming was deafening, the sight made her crush her eyes shut. Nothing she tried worked; she couldn't get him to stop. Why can't she make it stop? He wouldn't stop crying he wouldn't stop HE WOULDN'T STOP!!! And just like that, she felt something wrap around her, crushing her from all sides. She didn't know what this was, but it was bad. She looked around, nothing was there, but the pain was real. She couldn't take it anymore. She squeezed her eyes shut. She fell to the ground. She tried to cover her ears. It wouldn't stop though. WHY CAN'T IT STOP?! MAKE IT STOP! STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT!!!
She snapped herself out of it. She remained still for a few more moments, letting herself recompose. She felt her own tears running down her face. She tried so hard to just forget that day, but no matter how far she pushed it back, it always hits her when she least expects it. She sighed. It doesn't matter anyway.
Bede was going to die sooner or later.
She knew that no matter what, ordinary humans die when they get old. And while her dear friend was anything but that, the time would come eventually. One day, he'd go on, and here she'd stay. She wouldn't be able to go after him; her kind was an embodiment. The embodiment of Order. She was ment to strictly enforce the rules, and destroy those who cross the line.
Then why was she so lenient with him? Why did she let him break whatever rule he wanted? Why did she have to care so much?
These questions didn't matter. Once he goes, nothing will. Was this some sick joke? Letting her feel, care, and live? Was she a joke? Not being anything like she was supposed to be? Or was he a-
NO. NO HE WAS NOT.
Bede was anything but a joke. He was sweet, smart, understandable, and the softest human she ever squished (Granted the only Hooman she ever squished, but you get the idea.). She didn't know what the perfect human was, but he was that for her.
She can't just let someone like him go. Not without her.
But as much as she'd hate to admit it, humanity was taking him away from her. Other stupid airhead plastic GIRLS kept ambushing him, just fawning aaaaaalllll over him. Work meant they had less time to just talk, let alone do anything.
No, If she was going to get him back, she'd have to go to his level. But the question of how remained.
Then, an idea struck her. An idea that made her tears stop instantly. A smile stretched across her face.
With nothing more than a hand to wipe away the tears, she took off into the forest behind her.
