"Oh shit."
That was Gaby.
"I am so sorry- I didn't see you there- I really did not mean to hit you- It was accidental! I hope you're alright- are you hurt?" I couldn't stop myself. It was one thing to go crazy over a celebrity, but hitting them in the head from behind and then making an utter fool of yourself apologising was hardly the best first impression. That thought made me cringe more and I stopped myself short of reaching out and inspecting his head for any injuries.
Someone cleared their throat. Oh, it's him. His lips twitch slightly as I glance up from the floor. "It's alright. It didn't hurt much, just surprised me," having said that, he began turning around...
"Oh um, that's good. So I was wondering if maybe I could....have-a-photograph-with-you-coz-I'm-a-big-fan?" I don't know what the proper etiquette is for asking a celebrity for a photograph right after you've hit them on the head. He turned back, amusement evident in his eyes, and said "Well you do have a unique way of showing it. Sure, why not?"
Oh rub it in why don't you. I look towards Gaby as he begins to stand. She seemed to come to her senses then, having stood frozen in shock during the entire exchange. "I'll click!" she smiles really wide, acting like the perfect angel she most definitely isn't,"Smile! Picture perfect." I take the camera from her and look at the snapshot. It was good. Man, he was tall.
"....we absolutely loved you in that one, in fact every time it's on Syl just-"
"Okay Gaby I think we got it let's go!" I shut Gaby up before she can embarass me anymore and thank him for the picture. I was about to drag her off to the washroom when he called out with "I didn't catch your name though, big fan!" I turn my head around,"It's Sylvia. Sylvia Marquez." And then we left.
Gaby started squealing just as we entered the washroom. "Oh my goodness, did it really happen? We met a celebrity! An actual celebrity! Not just any celebrity but Chris Coleman! YOUR Chris Coleman! I know you deny it so vehemently but inside you swoon everytime he appears on screen with those dreamy eyes and- just WOW! Lucky you Syl!" I tried to look strict but oh heck, I couldn't hold it in," I know! Never had I ever thought we would meet like this! Speaking of which- I'm going to get back to you about that. But OMG I just met Chris Coleman! I got a picture with Chris Coleman! This trip really has started on such a good note." I can't help the smile that makes me feel my face would split in two halves. We hug each other hard, check ourselves in the mirror and go back. I notice that Chris has now shifted to the sofa opposite us. Probably to avoid any more collisions. Aware that he can see us, I try to behave as un-klutzy as possible. Surprisingly, it's him who strikes up a conversation after we're seated. Sadly, it was not with me. "So Gabriella, where are you two off to?" he asks, out of sake of politeness I guess. It doesn't escape my notice that there's no-one else in the lounge apart from us three. "Oh we're travelling to Italy, Syl and me. It's kind of my 'backpacking-trip-before-college' thing," she tells him. "What about you?" I ask him. "Same as you, actually. Another shooting. Promotional event. The usual," he shrugs "Maybe we would run into each other again there." He sends a smirk Gaby's way. She laughs lightly and says "Maybe" but I turn my attention away from them and back to my book. There was a weird sensation in my stomach that I didn't like one bit. So he was flirting with her. So what? Stars must do it all the time. It's not like he's mine or anything. He's not called a heartthrob for anything...
I managed to lose myself in the story of Christine and Adam for a few more minutes then but then soon I get the feeling of being watched. "What, Gaby?" I say without glancing up from the book. "It didn't mean anything," she says quietly. "What?" I scrunch my eyebrows and look up now. "The flirting. I didn't want it to be me. I didn't want him to. I'm sorry," she looks so sad I put down my book and clasp her hand in mine. It was good that Chris was nowhere around right now, he had moved out to attend to a phone call. "Oh Gaby! You don't have to feel guilty or anything, I don't blame you! I know you didn't. He's a celebrity, he probably flirts with every pretty girl he finds. Don't look so sad! You're my sister, of course you'd never go after my guy. And it's not like anything's ever going to happen with him. It's just a crush, now cheer up!" I bump my shoulder with hers and she smiles, relieved. The speakers above let us know that the boarding for our flight will be beginning soon and that all passengers must be ready, the gates will be opened in a few minutes. We gather our belongings and move to the gates, I don't see Chris anywhere though. Maybe he has VIP access, to avoid hordes of fans and everything..
"Yeah mom, we've boarded. I'm all buckled up and set to fly. Sylvie is putting our bags in the compartment. We know. Yeah. We will. You take care, bye now!" Gaby was talking to her mother on the phone. I look out of the airplane window: the sky was turning pink, the sun setting. We're actually doing it, we're going! It's all sinking in now. This is going to be one of my best trips ever, I can feel it.
The intercom above buzzes and the flight attendant's voice comes through "Please fasten your seatbelts. We're ready for take off."
