Sarah
I couldn’t remember a single moment Dad being considerate of my existence. My own father loathed me. He didn’t have to say the exact words, I had faced enough encounters in my last 16 years to somehow get the message. It’s an embarrassment in itself but I managed to make peace with it.
Engrossed in my thoughts , I didn’t sense Brad peeking inside my room. Without any word, he slid beside me on my bed.
So much for leaving me alone!
“Are you okay?”
“yea” I grumbled on his unwanted intrusion.
“Dad’s gonna leave now. Let’s go.” He nudged me with his shoulder.
I looked at Brad.
Our relationship had got better after our parents' divorce. Mom and Dad really sucked at parenting . Therefore we somehow understood that we only had each other to lean on. Even though we had been fighting like cats and dogs since we were young, he’s my only trusted person.
“Why does he drive me so crazy, Brad?” I asked him numbly.
“I don’t think there’s any particular reason. He’s just an obnoxious old bastard who gets himself off from insulting others.” He said so seriously that we both chuckled sadly on the absurdity of how much correct he was!
”Apparently Suzie likes big family and Dear Dad wants to show off our non-existing 'family bond' !” he rolled his eyes air quoting ‘family bond'.
I just stared at him blankly.
“And officially you’re still his family. “ he continued.
“Tell Dad he can shove his ‘family bond' up his ass” I retorted back.
Brad gave me an amused expression.
“Tell you what? We’ll stay there only for a few minutes and then I’ll come up with something to drag us out of there. You can postpone your practice for an hour right? "“Why can’t you tell Dad now? I really need to go to my practice "
“Dad’s pretty adamant Sarah! Plus Suzie will be there. I don’t think Dad can refuse us in front of someone he wanna impress.”
When did he become so sensible?
Brad was right of course. It’s our only way out!
“Besides aren’t you a little curious about this Suzie girl?” he pressed on knowing I was indeed a little intrigued.
Releasing a deep breath I confirmed
“okay I’m in.. "He raised his fist in victory and got up aiming for the door.
“But wait !" I stopped him and he looked back.
“what excuse do you have exactly?” I wondered.
“That our main guitarist got into an accident and you’ll take his place for tonight’s show. So we had to practice in time remaining. "
“But I don’t play guitar..”
“Dad doesn’t know that.. does he?” he smirked very well aware of the fact Dad didn’t know much about us except the basics.
I just hoped this worked.
_______________________________Dad got his dandy mood back, totally forgetting our breakfast argument. Brad’s riding shotgun whereas I was pretty contented with the backseat.
He looked back giving me a discreet thumb’s up.
