"the only reason i'm here is that nobody wanted my blood on their hands. i wish they had just let me fly."
"well, i'm happy that they didn't. it's a wonderful thing seeing your face every day, dottie."

After a failed attempt to leap to her death from the roof of the University of Edinburgh, American exchange student Dorothy Walker finds herself institutionalized at St. Jude's Asylum. Lost and resentful, her hope is to keep it together until she can be sent back to her family in Georgia.
That proves to be difficult, however, with one of her neighbors constantly by her side.
Campbell Bain is loud, overbearing, and hyperactive. Worst of all, he seems to have taken a liking to Dorothy. Seeing as how his manic episodes seem to be far from under control, she supposes that he'll be around for quite a while.
As the days drag on, Dorothy is surprised to find herself beginning to enjoy Campbell's company. The two form a bond to the soundtrack of the recently-enstated hospital radio station, sharing truths that neither of them would ever expect to offer to strangers.
But St. Jude's is a relatively joyless place, and Dorothy and Campbell are both more than a bit screwed up. All too often, situations such as these end unhappily, — but who said that either of them were ever destined for happily ever after?
