Today, I’ll let you in on a tale

About a prince, a shoe and how I went to jail

Listen carefully as I unfold

The truth of this famous story that is kept untold

I was a daughter of a duke back then

A beauty beyond compare to entire men

Everywhere I go, suitors followed me

I hate too much attention, I wanted to be free

One day while knitting I decided

Explore the town looking mundane and hooded

With luck I escaped unheard and unseen

The fright of getting caught turns into joyful keen

I hopped and skipped like a playful kid

Then I remember, I left the things I really need

My gold, my bag and a picture of my mother

She died when I was little, leaving me alone with my loving father

Now I have nothing left except this pair of silly glass slippers I’m wearing

And my undying hope for a new life I’m bearing

I bumped to a man on my way to town

He said he recognized me and then I gave him a frown

“You’re the duke’s daughter” he said

“I’m not” I answered immediately and then I went ahead

I seek the witch for a potion

She gave me a bottle but said to drink it with caution

It will change my hair, my looks and my body

So I won’t be recognized by anybody

But magic always comes with a price she said

I need to kill the king or she’ll see me dead

So off to the ball I went

To land my feet at the castle’s door I almost can’t

The witch dressed me with glitz and glamour

I feel it in my heart, I’m trapped once more

When I entered the hall everyone gazed at me

I am the fairest of them all, in their eyes I can see

I saw the queen from where stood

I recognized her face and it changed my mood

“It’s my mother” I whispered carefully

Then the prince came and said “Would you like to dance with me?”

While we danced I asked him about the queen

He said she’s not his real mother but he loves her as his own kin

To kill the king is my intention

And then I realized, this is all an intervention

I saw my father from a distance

The clock strikes twelve and I know this is my last chance

I kissed the prince then said goodbye

I can’t kill the king, no matter how hard I try

I run as fast as I can but I tripped

On the stairs I fell and my shoe got stripped

The witch will kill me if she knew

So into the woods quickly I flew

I hide and hide until I heard

The prince is searching for a girl, the town folks muttered

He’s carrying a shoe for the girls to try on

He said he’s going to marry the girl if it fits right on

Failure after failure the prince suffered

The shoe fits no one but his faith is still empowered

I went town to try it on

But the witch saw me on the light of dawn

My heart thuds as she went my way

She didn’t took my life but she said I’ll pay

And in a blink she came extinct

I don’t know what to do or what to think

So I focused my thoughts on the prince and my shoe

On where could he possibly be, I think I have a clue

I went to my mother back at the palace

She told me the truth and I felt I’m home at last

Then I wait for the prince to arrive

I waited like a driven bee inside a tiny hive

Halfway home he stopped to a house

There lived three girls, the mother and a talking mouse

The peasant girl tries on the glass shoe

And guess what folks, she’s size six too

They went home to the palace for me to see

That girl the prince took home looks exactly like me

I stood there confused and puzzled

I tried to explain but they had me muzzled

When I saw my face at the mirror

I saw different set of eyes that leaves me in horror

The witch cursed me and stole my name

She took everything as if she won a game

I’m bound, imprisoned and shivering in cold

I am kept away accused and left to mold

Is this the price of freedom I crave?

To be left alone inside this dark cave?
