After long hours in an uncomfortable plane, she finally got into a taxi. She didn't know what to expect from her new house, all she knew was that New York was a whole new world. Back in Texas everybody lived in calm suburban neighborhoods. She started seeing lights everywhere, buildings that seemed to touch the sky, incessant traffic... The city seemed to be alive.
As much as the city seemed to be alive, her apartment seemed to be dead.
It was dull gray, the walls were made of bricks, and there were some pipes in the corners. There was not much in the apartment. There was only a old fridge and a filthy couch. It would take centuries to make this place bearable. Come on, she came all the way from this tiny city, also known as Katy Mills, Texas, because her mom was promoted. Well, she expected something better than this.
"Uh... It's... Urban!" her mom said triying to sound cheery and failing gracefully.
"Yeah, sure. Very hipster-urban-conceitual." Kate said sarcastically. "Come on mom, you're a major director in this big paper producing company, couldn't they get you anything better?"
Her mom hesitated for a second, like she had forgetten how to speak.
"It's not that bad! That's why design exists!" her mom said enthusiastically. "The thing is, the company offered me this promotion, but the condition was I moved to New York and bought my own apartment. This one was so cheap and has so much potential..."
Kate knew her mom wanted to be a designer instead of a director of some random company. The apartment made her mom happy. As long as she was able to live in it she was fine.
"Mom!" Kate called "Is there Wi-Fi here?" she said as she got in her new room.
"Not really, dear. This probably taking some weeks..." her mom answered.
This was going to be harder than Kate thought.
