Adrien Agreste and tomboy Marinette Dupain-cheng are best friends in St. Xavier's College. The college principal Mr. Damocles has a beautiful daughter kagami, who comes to St. Xavier's from London to finish her degree. She becomes friends with both Adrien and Marinette. When Marinette realizes that she is in love with Adrien, she is encouraged by her motherly guardian Tikki to tell him so. Instead, Marinette is left heartbroken when Adrien tells her that he loves kagami. Marinette decides to leave college and shares a tearful goodbye with Adrien, going away from Adrien and kagami's lives forever. Kagami then realizes that she came between two best friends who actually loved each other. After college, Adrien marries kagami and, in a year of marriage, kagami gives birth to a baby girl. Kagami has complications in her pregnancy and has little time left, so she writes eight letters to her daughter (one for each of her first eight birthdays), so that she will know her mother. Before dying, kagami asks Adrien to promise her to name their daughter Marinette.
Eight years pass, and Adrien is a single parent living with his daughter and loving mother (Emilie Agreste). On her eighth birthday, little Marinette reads the last and most important letter that her mother left her; it tells the story of Marinette Dupain-cheng and how she was always Adrien's true love. Kagami explains in her letter that Adrien always said that love is friendship, and without friendship there can be no love. Adrien is a single parent and lacks a friend in his life, so kagami gives her daughter the mission of reuniting Adrien with Marinette Dupain-cheng and bringing back Adrien's lost love. Marinette Dupain-cheng is no longer the tomboy she was in college; she is now more feminine, and is engaged to Luka coffiane. However, she explains to her mother sabrine that she does not really love him and is marrying him as a compromise as she feels she can never love again after losing Adrien. Luka also suspects that she does not really love him. Marinette.jr and her grandmother search for Marinette and soon learn that she is going to be working at a summer camp. They travel there, with a plan to later lure Adrien to come as well, and the two Marinettes meet each other. One night while watching television, Marinette realizes she has met her best friend's daughter, and that kagami is dead. Adrien soon arrives at Camp Sunshine, where he and Marinette are surprised and delighted to see each other again, sharing a sweet reunion. Throughout the days spent at the camp, Adrien and Marinette feel themselves falling in love. However, Marinette remembers that she is engaged and feels guilty. Luka arrives and tells Adrien that he is Marinette's fiancee. Adrien is heartbroken but congratulates Marinette. She takes this as him rejecting her again, so she leaves summer camp and decides to get married to Luka as soon as possible.
After seeing kagami in a dream, Adrien and his family go to Marinette's wedding, where Adrien silently confesses to Marinette that he loves her, and watches in tears as she is brought forth for the wedding. Realizing this, Marinette is hesitant to go on with the marriage, and stands weeping. Luka notices the tears in her eyes and realizes that she has always been in love with Adrien. He releases Marinette from the engagement and tells her to marry Adrien. Adrien and Marinette have an emotional hug and as the two marry, little Marinette has a vision of kagami smiling and giving her the thumbs up
