I took a deep breath as I left Tim's, my iced tea in hand. I walked across the street, my first real job interview. A job that could lead me to my dream job. I wanted to be an animator and this low-paying job at this small animation company would be my first step. I can do this!
I pull out my phone to look over the job description.
Student Animation Position
Tasks
- Filling documents
- Faxing documents
- Communication with the animation team
Must be an animation student currently in a post-secondary program. There will be opportunities to show your animation skills. Please bring a portfolio of your work to the interview.
Yes, my portfolio was in my hand. I was ready. I can do this.
I looked over my portfolio, admiring all of my hard work. When-
Crash!
I fell to the ground, my artwork flying all over the place. My tea spilled across my clothes.
"No! My cold brew! God, I just got that from Tims!!!" I looked across. She had long blond hair shaped in the perfect waves. Her long legs, denim shorts, and soft pink tank top covered in the cold brew. "Ugh, my clothes are ruined. Watch where you are going next time!"
She started lecturing me, but I wasn't paying attention. All I could focus on was all of those original artworks that just blew away, either destroyed but the traffic, the coffee, or lost and never to be seen again.
No! No! No!
This couldn't be happening! This is supposed to be my big break. How I get started in the animation business. I had nothing now, I can't go to the interview empty-handed and covered in coffee and iced tea.
"Are you even listening to me?" She stood before me. I looked her in the eyes and a single tear fell to my cheek. She let out a long sigh. "I'm sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going either." She looked at the artwork blowing away.
"That was all the original art I had for my interview. I'm never going to get this job now."
"Hey hey, it'll be okay. Maybe I can help you out. Where's your interview?"
"Right here." I pointed to the building that had a big sign reading Orange Animation Studio
"Omg, that's great!"
I shot her a disappointing look. "How would that be great?"
"I work there! I can go in and explain to my boss what happened! You're going to get this job, I promise."
I didn't know it at the time but running into that person, getting her coffee spilt everywhere, and losing all my original artwork would eventually result in the start of an amazing journey, career, relationship, and friendship.
