George stepped onto the court labeled One. Out of the ten courts the school owned, he chose that one to stand on. The brown haired newbie wasn't sure what to do, or where to go. In his hand was a racket he got from the school sports shack. The tip of the head had it's paint scratched off and the silver paint on the strings had started to wither away. And the grip was terrible.
"George, I already said the first timers meet on court six over there. I know you're going to be a Junior next year, but you'll have to learn the basics kid." A balding man in his mid fifties said as walked over to him with a clipboard. He was the tennis director, in charge of both Junior Varsity and Varsity. Each of those groups had respective coaches.
George nodded, leaving court one feeling embarrassed. Of course he just didn't pay attention at the meeting before the first practice. It was very hot outside, and summer just started. It was no surprise he had other things on his mind. Besides, George didn't necessarily want to be here. It wasn't like he knew anything about tennis. As he stepped foot onto the sixth court, he was greeted by the JV coach.
"Good afternoon, I'm coach Freeman. And you must be George..." He trailed off, trying to remember his last name. George opened his mouth to help him out, but was interrupted before he could speak. "No, no." The coach said, seeing George open his mouth. "Just give me a moment, I will remember." The other kids his age laughed, watching the guy struggle to remember.
"Ah! Daveson." George tilted his head to the side as he tried to process the incorrect last name he'd been given. He held up his index finger, as if trying to peacefully find a way to correct the seemingly sweet coach he had.
"Actually.. It's Davidson. You were close though." The man laughed lightheartedly, saying that he'd get it right next time. He then called all the people he had with him over to him.
"Alright, seems this will be what I have to work with for the next few weeks until you get your placements. I know some of you are new, and others are returning JV players, but I promise, I don't pick favorites. I'm not like Coach Lenz. These next 3 weeks are just conditioning to get you ready for the upcoming season and placement matches. You might find yourself playing our returning Varsity players if you meet the requirements and move up. I hope you boys will give it your all, and have fun. As you know this is the summer season, so no sectionals, just a tournament. When fall comes around, I hope to see many of you return. Now, without further ado, here's a tennis ball. If you have the tennis ball, you have to say your name and a trait you have. Then pass it along. Once everyone has done it, we'll shadow hit."
George felt like his brain was spinning. This guy talked fast. Before he knew it, a yellow-green ball was put in his hand by the coach, and everyone was staring at him.
"Uh.. My name is George. And.." He tried to think of a trait. He felt put on the spot so suddenly that he couldn't think. "I.. am colorblind." A couple oo's and ah's sounded from the group as George quickly passed along the tennis ball to the kid next to him.
"Hello! My name is Tommy, and I am here because my mum forced me." The kids laughed a little.
"That's not a trait dimwit!" One guy yelled to him, which later revealed that his name was Wilbur. George watched the interaction between the other kids, and felt a little bit out of place as he wasn't really socially interactive. This was already quite out of his comfort zone. Actually, his comfort was at home, eating crisps and playing minecraft. He watched as the 11 other kids finally were introduced.
George took a liking to the two argumentative boys. Wilbur and Tommy. But what was more intriguing was that they also had a british accent.
"Hey coach." Wilbur called out, spinning his racket in his hand. "Aren't you forgetting something?" The man stopped what he was doing and began to think. While Tommy was new, Wilbur was a returning JV player.
