THE NIGHT WAS EMPTY, like a bottomless void, it was dark, it was constant. not a cloud in sight, the sky was empty.

it served as a constant reminder to those who haven't found the one, because you only get to admire the beauty of our stars — the night with the person that fills that aching void, your soulmate, and it was something you've spent your life thinking of. for some, it was excitement, for what could be up there, for no words can describe the apparent beauty of it. and for others, its dread. a reminder looming over  ( quite literally ) that it wasnt time. it wasnt  the one.

most people would say you should be excited for your soulmate, excited to see the stars, to see them with the "love" of your life— to spend the rest of your life with them. it did sound nice, but forever is a long time. you wanted to fall in love, yes, but you couldn't imagine being together for a lifetime.

the streets were never empty in tokyo, the constant sound of alarms blaring and the blur of orange headlights, but there was nothing much to pay attention to, besides the swarms of people that seemed to pass by.

it was approaching 10 pm, the train whirred as it came to a stop, the doors sliding open. slowly, you got up from your seat on the metal bench, joining the crowd of people packed inside.

the city never really did sleep, you thought to yourself as you stepped on. the air conditioning was harsh, it felt like stepping into an entirely new climate on that train, and despite your jacket going all the way up to your neck, it was still cold.

it was a miracle you got a seat, the blue fabric adorning the seats was torn at the edges, it's definitely seen better days. the bus was the worst place to be right now. it was full of sweaty people, perverts, among the other public transit stereotypes. but then again, you just want to go home in one piece and head to bed, completely disregarding your english papers until the sun is glaring at your face. everyone does, so no one can really do much about it.

the best (and only ) thing you can do is just sit and wait, your earphones did a good job of tuning out the rest of the world anyways.
which lead to your downfall. you hadn't even noticed the finger on your shoulder, tapping you awake until you woke up, instinctively jumping back as you held the bag of your guitar to your chest.

" uh– is this seat taken?"

a blonde quietly asked, his roots overgrown and his eyes half lidded. he looked tired, but isn't everyone? blinking a few times, you plucked out an earphone and choked out a  " ah–no! ahem .. no, its not. " before quickly turning your head because maybe you were too loud.

he tilts his head slightly, but decides not to pry, sitting down next to you, making sure to put space between your legs so he doesn't make you uncomfortable.

colors flash upon his phone screen, and soon enough, you peek, just a little, i mean, it wouldn't hurt? you let your excitement bubble up before you can stop yourself.

" is that pokemon ruby?? how did you get an emulator ??" came out of your mouth all too quickly and you feel like burying yourself in the snow just so no one can find you.

an amused, or a hopefully amused huff escapes the stranger next to you, and you can only pray that he isn't laughing at you.

"mm..yeah. it is." his voice was quiet, and you nearly wouldn't have heard him there was a hint of hesitance in his voice. he might say something wrong, and he wasn't really one to talk to people anyways.

" could you send it to me? ive been trying to find a way to get it for ... forever. ah— you might need my number for that .. if you're okay with it ! im rambling—"

" no its— its fine, i can send it to you. " you
blinked a few times before nodding, handing him your phone.

well, atleast there were two things you got out of tonight; a way to download old pokemon games on your phone and a pretty guy's number.

whilst the cold air hits your face as you walk along the pavement, you stare up at the sky, and as always, there's not a single star in sight.
